... a major container failure, into two or more pieces, at a moment in time when the contained liquid is at a temperature well above its boiling point at normal atmospheric pressure. A typical example is that of a propane tank engulfed in a fire.... When the metal fails, the liquid is exposed to atmospheric pressure and is well above its boiling point. Under certain conditions this results in a violent explosion. Once containment is lost, the liquid inside the tank boils, since it is no longer under pressure, and gives the first two letters of the phenomenon-Boiling Liquid. As the liquid boils, vapour is formed. The specific volume of the vapour is much larger than that of the liquid, so there is expansion-Expanding Vapour. There is an Explosion because there is a shock wave and the container is torn apart. 1, record 4, English, - boiling%20liquid%20expanding%20vapour%20explosion

BLEVE. [...]

Explosion wave. From the French, onde explosive, and coined by Bertholet, signifying that wave or flame which passes through a uniform gaseous mixture with a permanent maximum velocity. The rate of the explosion wave is a definite physical constant for each mixture. The explosion wave travels with the velocity of sound in the burning gas which itself is moving rapidly forward en masse in the same direction, so that the explosion wave is propagated far more rapidly than sound travels in the unburned gas. 1, record 11, English, - explosion%20wave

Detonation is a process in which the ... explosive reaction takes place within a high-velocity shock wave known as the "detonation wave" or "reaction shock". This wave generally propagates at constant velocity from below 800 to above 8500 meters/sec, depending on the explosive, its density and physical state. Detonation velocity may be measured accurately by direct flame photography ... and by electronic chronographs. 7, record 16, English, - detonation%20velocity
