CONT

Spherical errors occur when the optical power of the eye is either too large or too small to focus light on the retina.

CONT

A spectacle prescription may include a spherical component (often called the spherical error or the sphere), a cylindrical component (often called the cylindrical error), a prismatic component, an addition for near vision and the interpupillary distance.

CONT

Viewing Distance at Computer Workstations.... Accommodation is when the lens capsule in your eye changes shape to focus on a close object. The eyes have a default accommodation distance, called the resting point of accommodation(RPA). That is the distance at which the eyes focus when there is nothing to focus on. In total darkness our eyes are set to focus at a particular distance, so that if the lights were turned on, an object at that distance would be in clear focus. The RPA averages 30 inches for younger people and gets farther away with age.

CONT

... reading from a computer screen ... Our eyes have what is called a "dark focus." This is the point in space where your focus would be if your eyes were totally relaxed. Imagine a pitch black room. In such an environment, where you can’t see anything, your eyes are actually focusing on a fixed point in space, that is why it is called the "dark" focus. This focus is known as the Resting Point of Accommodation (RPA) and is unique to every individual, but it usually rests more than three feet away from your face (and does not depend on time of day or age).

Key term(s)
  • accommodation resting point
  • accommodation resting state

French

Domaine(s)
  • Oeil
DEF

... a spectroscope or spectrograph... are effectively the same thing except that a spectroscope is simply used for visual inspection(that is, your eye is the detector), while a spectrograph includes some means(photographic film or an electronic detector) for recording the spectrum for analysis. In professional astronomy these days there is very little need for a spectroscope... a spectrograph in its simplest form,... is a light-tight box with a small(often narrow rectangular or adjustable) opening to let light in, a grating to break the light into its components, and a "detector" of some kind placed at the proper angle and distance from the grating to record the spectrum of the wavelength range of interest. Telescopes are used to gather the faint light from distant objects, and the spectrographs are placed at the focus of the telescope to analyze the light.
