EYE WALL [9 records]

Record 1 2023-09-22

English

Subject field(s)

  • Atmospheric, Climatic and Meteorological Phenomena
DEF

... the rotating, localized lowering of the cloud base beneath the rain-free portion of a thunderstorm that often precedes tornado development ...

CONT

Wall clouds can range from a fraction of a mile up to nearly five miles in diameter, and normally are found on the south or southwest (inflow) side of the thunderstorm. Even though this cloud is lowering, it remains attached to the rain free cloud base of the thunderstorm. It is usually located south or southwest of the visible precipitation area, and marks the strongest updraft in the thunderstorm. The wall cloud develops as the strong updraft draws in surface moisture from several miles away.

OBS

"Wall cloud" also is used occasionally in tropical meteorology to describe the inner cloud wall surrounding the eye of a tropical cyclone, but the proper term for this feature is "eyewall. "

CONT

An educational program is not necessarily limited to classroom lectures but may also include use of an eye lane — in which a pilot stands at one side of a dark room and looks through NVGs at an eye chart on the opposite wall to learn to focus the goggles; a terrain board — a miniature layout of the type of terrain where the pilot will operate; or a simulator, as well as computer-based or Web-based training.

Some of the outer rainbands may strengthen and organize into a ring of thunderstorms - an outer eyewall - that slowly moves inward and robs the inner eyewall of its needed moisture and angular momentum.

The concentric eyewall is often observed in intense hurricanes. The small inner eyewall could be replaced by an outer one. Such eyewall replacement may result in a rapid change in intensity. It is still not clear how the concentric eyewall forms and how it replaces the inner eyewall.

The assembly of claim 2 wherein the firebox of the fireplace unit is defined by a plurality of interconnected walls, and the fireplace unit further includes a firebox surround in the firebox and spaced apart from the interconnected walls.

CONT

A direct vent fireplace installation assembly is provided that includes a furniture unit having an enlarged receptacle well above the ground, and a direct vent fireplace unit positioned in the receptacle of the furniture unit. The fireplace unit ahs a firebox contained in an outer housing, a burner assembly in the firebox, and a contoured surround, surrounding the burner positioned in and spaced apart from walls of the firebox. A chimney is coupled to the firebox. In one embodiement, the fireplace unit is mounted in a receptacle in a wall structure positioned above the floor, at approximately eye level. There may be a heat exchange passageway between the outer housing and the firebox, and a blower for circulating air therethrough.

Subject field(s)
  • Visual Disorders
CONT

Floaters are entoptic images of opacities in the vitreous. Entoptic image is a visual perception that is produced by structures within the eye-in this case vitreous opacities. Patients complain of small specks or dots that can be seen against a bright background such as a diffusely illuminated wall or the blue sky. Sometimes fine dark lines in amorphous mass-like small branching twigs-are seen. These floaters move around and are also called ’muscae volitantes’ because they seem to dart about like flies as the eye is moved.

OBS

The vitreous is a jelly like substance which changes consistency as we age. This change causes the vitreous to separate from the retina. When this happens, the back of the vitreous can be seen as a floater. Most people describe this as a spider web or floating speck. High myopia and trauma can make vitreous separations occur earlier.

OBS

The terms "vitreous floater" and "floater" are usually used in the plural.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Troubles de la vision
DEF

Opacités troublant la transparence du vitré.

CONT
