The first ionospheric layer found was the so called E layer or region at about 110 km altitude. It is used by radio operators as a surface from which signals can be reflected to distant stations. It is interesting to note that this works also the other way round and, for example, the auroral kilometric radiation created by the precipitating particles high above the ionosphere does not reach the ground because of the ionospheric E layer. Above the E layer, a F layer consisting of two parts can be found : F1 is at about 170 km, and F2 at about 250 km altitude. Also F layer reflects radio waves. The lowermost region of the ionosphere below 80 km altitude, D layer, however, principally absorbs radio waves. 2, record 7, English, - ionospheric%20layer

3, record 8, French, - couche%20F

F region [is] the upper region of the ionosphere, above approximately 160 km altitude. F region electron densities are highly variable, depending on the local time, solar activity, season, and geomagnetic activity. The F region contains the F1 and F2 layers. The F2 layer is more dense and peaks at altitudes between 200 and 600 km. The F1 layer, which forms at lower altitudes in the daytime, has a smaller peak in electron density. 5, record 12, English, - F%20region

4, record 12, French, - r%C3%A9gion%20F

The Very High Resolution Spectrometer. The 6. 65 m off-plane Eagle spectrometer connected to the Synchrotron Ultraviolet Radiation Facility(SURF II) electron storage ring at the National Institute of Standards and Technology(NIST) is one of the two very high resolution spectrometers(VHRS) in the world that combine a synchrotron radiation light source with photoelectric detection of vacuum ultraviolet spectra. Spectra are obtained over a usable range from approximately 20 nm to 200 nm by scanning the exit slit of the spectrometer at wavelength intervals as small as 0. 1 pm in first order. The beamline leading to the entrance slit of the VHRS includes three cylindrical uncoated glass mirrors with incident angles of 80, 70, and 80 degrees from the normal to provide a converging beam to match the f/number of the instrument which is about f/50. Since 1990, when the three-mirror light collection system was improved, a number of high resolution measurements have been made in the region between 40 nm and 120 nm. 2, record 14, English, - very%20high%20resolution%20spectrometer
