FABRIC SPREADING [10 records]

Record 1 2022-07-24

English

Subject field(s)
  • Textile Industries
DEF

Any fabric laid out in preparation for cutting, either as a single layer or as a stack.

CONT

The number of plies in a spread is dependent on the number of articles required and the technical limits of the fabric spreading and cutting process.

OBS

In French, "matelas de coupe" designates a stack of fabric lengths laid out for cutting.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Industries du textile
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Rubber Processing
CONT

Spreading. At the start of the rubber industry in the 1800s, a high demand product was waterproofed textiles, and the spreading technique developed early. A rubber compound is dissolved in an organic solvent and spread on the textile with a knife. After the solvent has been evaporated a rubber film has been formed on the textile, and the coated fabric is cured in a hot oven.

Most geomembranes are made in a plant using one of the following manufacturing processes :(i) extrusion,(ii) spread coating, or(iii) calendering.... Spread coating process usually consists in coating a fabric(woven, nonwoven, knit) by spreading a polymer or asphalt compound on it. The geomembranes thus produced are therefore reinforced. Non-reinforced geomembranes can be made by spreading a polymer on a sheet of paper which is removed and discarded at the end of the manufacturing process.

CONT

Made in situ, non-reinforced geomembranes are made by spraying or otherwise placing a hot or cold viscous material directly onto the surface to be lined(earth, concrete, etc.).... Manufactured, non-reinforced geomembranes are made in a plant by extrusion or calendering of a polymeric compound, without any fabric reinforcement, or by spreading a polymer on a sheet of paper removed at the end of the manufacturing process.

OBS

[Non-supported geomembrane:] Supported geomembrane: ... the term "supported", sometimes used for "reinforced", is not recommended because it may create a confusion with the "supporting" soil or geotextile on which the geomembrane is resting.

CONT

Fabric containment systems... fabrics can reinforce soils by being sandwiched in layers and by supporting the soil at an exposed face. A logical extension to horizontal and vertical reinforcement is the complete encapsulation of the soil by fabric. Case histories.... A series of 4-to 7-foot high dikes constructed on low-strength highly compressible marsh soils have presented continual maintenance problems since their construction.... The dike rehabilitation program utilized fabrics in two different applications. The main application was in using wooden chips as a lightweight fill and containing these by means of fabric as a form. Thus soil intrusion into the wood chips is prevented, as is lateral spreading of the wooden chips.

OBS
