Record 1 2015-01-09

English

Subject field(s)
  • Textile Industries
  • Nonwoven Textiles
DEF

Fabric made by the wet-forming process. The short fibers typically have more random orientation in the web and the web has more isotropic properties than carded webs.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Industries du textile
  • Nontissés (Industries du textile)
CONT

Obtention des non-tissés [...] Voie humide : [...]

DEF

A technique for bonding fibers of a web with meltable powders or fibers, using infrared heating, hot air, or hot-calendering.

CONT

Thermal bonding is somewhat unique to synthetic, thermoplastic fibers. Here, the fibers are distributed onto belts as webs that are subsequently bonded together with heat.

OBS

Thermally bonded fabric is usually produced by passing loose webs of synthetic fibers through calender rolls or ovens. Calender-bonded fabric is produced using hot calender rolls that press fibers together at selected points(much like film heat sealing) and create patterns of tiny dots of fused fibers that hold the web together. Oven-bonded fabric is produced when the fibers are fused together with hot air wherever they touch one another. Calender-bonded fabric is flat and cloth-like. Oven-bonded fabric is more open and lofty.

The evolution of press clothing from "conventional felts" to engineered fabrics has paralleled changes in paper machine design. Originally, all felts were woven from spun yarns and were mechanically felted or "fulled" to provide bulk and stability. These felts, manufactured mainly from wool, had low vertical permeability and poor service life. The needling process developed in the 1950's made possible the introduction of the "batt-on-base" felt. This construction involves the vertical needling of a fibrous web(batt) onto a woven base fabric. This change allowed higher percentages of synthetic fibers to be used.

Sheet transfer from wire to press section. Originally, all paper machines employed an open-draw sheet transfer from the forming section to the press section. One type of open-draw configuration is illustrated in Figure 16-77. The tension needed to pull the wet web off the forming fabric is provided by a speed differential between the press and forming sections.(Wet paper develops tension when stretched, but as with other visco-elastic materials, the tension decays rapidly with time. For each subsequent open draw, sheet tension must be reimposed by an additional speed differential between sections.) Open draws are commonly used for heavyweight sheets and are still found on older lightweight machines operating at speeds below 600 m/min(2000 ft/min).
