Selon les dictionnaires courants usuels, le terme «assiette» semble réservé au domaine de l'aéronautique et fait allusion à la «position du trièdre d'un avion par rapport au trièdre de référence terrestre» (Dictionnaire encyclopédique Larousse); le terme «attitude» est synonyme d'«orientation» et est réservé aux domaines de l'aérospatiale et de l'astronautique pour désigner la «direction des axes d'un engin spatial par rapport à un trièdre de référence (Dictionnaire encyclopédique Larousse). The attitude indicator relies on the principle of gyroscopic rigidity in space--the rapidly-spinning rotor disk resists any attempt to disturb its orientation. Thus, the gyro provides a stable horizontal reference against which the pitch and roll attitudes of the aircraft can be measured. The "artificial horizon bar" on the face of the attitude indicator is mechanically coupled to the gyro inside, so it remains parallel to the natural horizon. The instrument's little "symbolic airplane" is fixed to the instrument case, however, so it follows the roll and pitch movements of the real airplane. Consequently, the relationship of the horizon bar to the symbolic airplane is the same as the relationship between the natural horizon and the real airplane.

The attitude indicator and heading indicator are based on a gyro’s rigidity in space. Because a gyro resists being tipped over, it can provide a stable reference to the real horizon or to a specific direction.

Le gyroscope de l'indicateur de virage est généralement fixé selon un angle de 30 degrés. Lorsque l'avion vire, la force centrifuge entraîne la précession du gyroscope. L'importance de la précession fait s'incliner vers la gauche ou vers la droite un avion miniature situé sur le cadran de l'instrument. Plus le virage est rapide, plus la précession est forte, d'où une inclinaison plus importante de l'avion miniature.

Lorsqu'on lève le nez de l'avion, l'avion stylisé [de l'horizon artificiel] monte au-dessus de la barre d'horizon pour indiquer une assiette nez haut. Lorsqu'on baisse le nez de l'avion, l'avion stylisé cale sous l'horizon pour indiquer une assiette nez bas. Lorsque l'avion s'incline, l'avion stylisé s'incline par rapport à la barre d'horizon et l'aiguille indique le nombre de degrés d'inclinaison sur l'échelle graduée. [...] Lorsqu'il est verrouillé, le gyroscope est immobilisé de telle façon que l'avion-symbole affiche le vol en palier.

An appliance for loosening coal by means of high-pressure water and oil. It consists of a round stainless steel bar with small telescopic rams acting on a steel liner in a shothole. The bar is connected to a hand-or power-operated pump placed near the face. The high-pressure liquid from the pump causes the rams and liner to exert a pressure sufficient to loosen or break down the coal. It is a safe method of coal breaking without the use of explosives. It has not, however, made the progress originally anticipated.

In screw-type flaring, the first three steps are the same as for impact flaring, namely, the tube cut to length and all burrs removed, and the coupling nut is then slipped over the end of the tube. The tube is clamped in the flaring bar so that the end of the tube is slightly above the face of the bar.... The yoke of the flaring tool is placed on the bar so that the bevelled end of the compressor cone is over the tube end. The compressor screw is tightened down forming the flare between the chamfer of the flaring bar and the bevelled compressor cone. The flaring tool is then removed and the joint assembled in the same manner as described under impact flaring.

[...] Fixer la chape de l'outil à évaser sur la barre de façon que l'extrémité biseautée du cône de compression se trouve au-dessus de l'extrémité du tube. Serrer la vis de compression pour former l'évasement entre le chanfrein de la barre à évaser et l'extrémité biseautée du cône de compression. Retirer l'outil à évaser et assembler les éléments de la même façon que dans le cas des éléments à collet évasé par percussion.
