A shore break is a type of wave that breaks directly on or very close to the shore, often in extremely shallow water. These waves tend to rise quickly and crash with force, creating a powerful and steep wave face. Shore breaks can be fun for body surfing but are challenging and sometimes dangerous for board surfers due to their intensity and the shallow water.

The catchpins were designed in one of two ways. A number are straightforward copper alloy cylindrical nails with a sharp point, and are hammered into the board face through the coverings. There are a large number of surmounted catchpins in which the nail has a square skirt of copper alloy plate halfway down the pin which is sometimes lightly decorated with engraved lines.

In skiing and snowboarding, a face shot refers to the situation where the snow that is sprayed from the edge of the skis or board during a turn flies up into the face. Face shots only occur in deep powder snow. They most frequently occur for snowboarders when doing a heelside turn. They can be dangerous due to the way they negatively impact on visibility.

SMB-Side Marker Board(Not to be used by B747). 1. This system consists of a white base board with vertical slats mounted at specific intervals along the face of the board. 2. Each slat has a black edge. The side facing the approach direction is green and the opposite side is red. Each slat has a name tab to indicate the aircraft type to which it applies. 3. As the correct stopping position is neared, the green side of the slat gradually disappears until only the black edge is visible. If the correct stop position is passed, the red side begins to appear.
