L'alliage Ag-In-Cd (AIC) utilisé comme absorbant neutronique gonfle sous irradiation et la diminution de sa densité peut atteindre environ 2 % dans les zones les plus irradiées. Le gonflement s'effectue en trois étapes : la phase initiale de structure cristallographique cubique faces centrées (cfc) évolue continûment sous irradiation par substitution d'atomes d'argent et d'indium par respectivement des atomes de cadmium et d'étain; cela entraîne une variation de son paramêtre de maille et une augmentation de son volume atomique (jusqu'à 0,8 %).
