Facial motion capture is a type of optical [motion capture]. It is the process of electronically converting the movements of a person's face into a digital database using cameras or laser scanners. This database may then be used to produce CG(computer graphics), computer animation for movies, games, or real-time avatars.

DEF

A measurable physical attribute or behavioural trait used to validate or establish the identity of an individual.

CONT

The reliability of biometric systems depends on a number of factors, including the scale of operation and purpose of the system. It depends on what biometric identifier is used(fingerprints, retinal scans, voice or face recognition, etc.) and in what way the biometric data is matched against the reference database.

OBS

CONT

[In one study] the parent holding the baby apparently could see the stimuli and, therefore, potentially influence the baby’s behaviour ... It is essential in work of this type that both the holder and observer be "blind". Moreover, in the completed work, the test phase was designed so that recovery to novelty could not be distinguished from regression to the mean ... Babies in the seven groups that the applicants propose to compare are likely to be at different phases of habituation after 12 trials. As a consequence, it would be difficult to interpret any differences in their reaction to the novel stimulus presented ... Such differences could be due to differential reinforcing effectiveness of the stimulus ....

CONT

The relationship between encoding, discriminative capacities and perinatal risk status in 4-12-month old infants : response decrement and recovery to a novel visual stimulus was examined in [these infants]. High(HR) and low(LR) perinatal risk groups were compared to well babies. For abstract stimuli, well babies showed response decrement and recovery to novelty; LR infants revealed some decrement, but no recovery... Using face stimuli, all groups showed decrement and recovery [Source : PASCAL database].

[The study analyzes] the decoding of emotional facial expressions [and] how the proposed identification of the contribution of different facial components to the prototypes of different facial emotional expressions is to be accomplished ... the approach taken ... to collecting data from 5-6 and 9-10 years-old on their judgements of the quality of emotional expressions and their intensities is inadequately outlined. The empirical and theoretical work done ... on the development of emotional facial recognition in ontogeny is not adequately reviewed.

CONT

Comprehension and expression of affect in language-impaired(LI) children : 8 children with developmental language impairment and 8 age-, sex-, socioeconomic-status-, and I. Q.-matched controls were given tests of comprehension and expression of affective intent in spoken language and through facial expression... On tasks involving emotional facial expression, [these results] were observed : The Li children were more dramatic in their expression of facial affect than were the controls. Children with language impairment appear to have a deficit in affective comprehension and expression that is modality-specific, i. e., limited to vocal affect... To date little evidence is available as to how emotional facial expression is decoded, specifically whether a bottom-up(data-driven) or a top-down(schema-driven) approach is more appropriate in explaining the decoding of emotions from facial expression. A study is reported... in which decoders judged emotions from photographs of facial expressions. Stimuli represented a selection of photographs depicted both single muscular movements(action units) in an otherwise neutral face, and combinations of such action units... Schizophrenics, depressives, patients with anxiety neurosis and normal controls were asked to comment freely for 2 minutes on photographs depicting 7 facial emotional expressions....
