An iron with a face angled to 55 degrees to give the most loft as in explosion shots to take the ball out of a sand trap; it is identical to a pitching wedge but has a thicker base to permit it to dig into the sand.

OBS

The term "wedge"(as its French equivalent "cocheur") is a generic for angled-face irons, though more often used to mean the "sans wedge" because, of the "sand wedge" and the "pitching wedge", it is the iron more often found in a golf bag. Nevertheless, it is better to use the term only when it is evident which club is meant.

Because it has more loft than a no. 9 iron, it seems that it used to be called a "no. 10 iron".

Pour désigner ce bâton, on a d'abord utilisé l'anglicisme «sand wedge», puis, dans les années 80, «wedge de sable», jusqu'à ce que, sur la recommandation de l'Office de la langue française, on adopte «cocheur de sable». Le terme «cocheur» (et son équivalent anglais «wedge») est un générique pour les bâtons à angle très ouvert qui ne peut être utilisé pour signifier ce bâton qu'une fois établi qu'il est question d'un «cocheur de sable» ou d'un «cocheur d'allée»; «fer-plat», ou «fer plat», n'a plus cours.
