If one were inside a closed mold and looking outside, the mating junction of the mold cavities would appear as a line. It also appears as a line on the molded piece and is called the parting line. A piece may have several parting lines.

The Proctor test itself consists of dropping a 2. 5 kg hammer with 5. 1 cm diameter face from a height of 0. 30 m onto the soil specimen confined in a 10. 2 cm diameter mould. The soil must be compacted in 3 equal layers, each to receive 25 blows of the hammer.

Compaction tests ... The simplest and the most widely used are the "Proctor tests" named for R.R. Proctor, who first developed the optimum-moisture-maximum-density concept.

Le but de l'essai Proctor est de déterminer quelle est la teneur en eau optimale d'un sol qui permet le meilleur compactage pour une énergie donnée. Il est basé sur la remarque que la compacité est proportionnelle à la densité sèche du terrain.

L'essai Proctor se fait en compactant dans un moule des couches successives de terre ayant la même teneur en eau, en laissant tomber en chute libre une petite dame [...] Le sol ne doit pas avoir de grains supérieurs à 5 millimètres, et les conditions de l'essai sont normalisées, ainsi d'ailleurs que la nature du socle sur lequel repose le moule.

Les essais de laboratoire de loin les plus répandus sont des essais de compactage manuel par percussion (chute d'une masse sur des couches de sol à étudier). On citera en premier lieu les deux essais Proctor dénommés respectivement «essai Proctor modifié» et «essai Proctor normal».
