Record 1, Textual support, English
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 DEF
A stroke in which the gunwale or side of the canoe is used as a fulcrum and the paddle as a lever. 3, record 1, English, - pry%20stroke
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Another stroke which may be used by either the bow or stern paddler is the pry stroke. The paddle is inserted vertically in the water, with the power face outward, and the shaft braced against the gunwale. A gentle prying motion is applied, forcing the canoe in the opposite direction of the paddling side. 4, record 1, English, - pry%20stroke
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Since most hulls tends to veer - once the bow begins to turn, the stern slides out and forward, quickly pivoting the hull - the pry is best applied at the stern to offset veer and keep the hull aligned. 5, record 1, English, - pry%20stroke
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 OBS
It is the opposite of a draw, moving the canoe away from the paddle. 3, record 1, English, - pry%20stroke

Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 DEF
Une manœuvre qui déplace le canot ou l'une de ses pointes vers le côté opposé à la pagaie. Elle repousse l'eau du canot. 1, record 1, French, - %C3%A9cart%20actif
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 CONT
3, record 1, French, - %C3%A9cart%20actif

- kniffing J 1, record 2, English, kniffing%20J
Record 2, Textual support, English
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 CONT
At the end of the J stroke, the paddle is kniffed forward underwater with the power face of the paddle almost flat and facing up. Steering is accomplished by pulling up on the blade as it is brought forward. About halfway through the recovery, the paddle is allowed to slip out of the water in readiness for the next power stroke. The trick is getting a very slight angle on the blade as it comes forward. If the angle is wrong the paddle will plane out of the water or drive too deep. The angle is controlled by the upper hand. 2, record 2, English, - Canadian%20stroke
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 OBS
It used to be called the kniffing J but American canoeists began referring to it as the Canadian stroke. Most Canadians are happy to go along with this name because it is such a beautiful stroke. 2, record 2, English, - Canadian%20stroke

Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 CONT
2, record 2, French, - coup%20canadien

Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 DEF
A canoeing stroke executed by reaching the paddle out to the side and pulling it toward the canoe with the blade flattened. 5, record 3, English, - draw
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The draw stroke exerts a force opposite to that of the pry. The paddle is inserted vertically in the water at arm's length from the gunwale, with the power face toward the canoe, and is then pulled inward to the paddler's hip. 6, record 3, English, - draw
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 2 CONT
The drawstroke paddle maneuver is useful for moving the canoe sideways and for quickly changing the direction of the canoe. 3, record 3, English, - draw
