However, these forests are severely threatened. The timber industry is increasing its logging rate. Massive native forest clearance and replacement by tree plantations are well under way, with State Government targets of 10, 000 hectares per annum. The remaining forests face threats from fire, disease, new roads, tourism impacts and introduced species.

The angle between the direction of the grain and the axis of the piece, expressed as a slope, and measured over a distance that will assure the determination of the general slope of the grain, not influenced by short local deviations.

Cross-grain : A general term for any grain deviating considerably from the direction of the longitudinal axis of a piece of timber and emerging at an angle from a face or edge.(1) May occur only locally in the piece, and be regular or irregular.(2) Its degree(slope of grain) is measured by the angle of deviation(grain angle) or by the tangent of the angle.

An axe with one face bevelled and the other flat, for hewing timber.

CONT

The Side Axe was one of the main tools of the medieval builder and is still in occasional use, e.g. on the water front, or for squaring-up round timbers in the wood for the saw pit or saw mill. One advantage of the Side Axe over the Saw is its ability to follow the angles or taper of the timber, thus avoiding waste and retaining full strength.

OBS

"Squaring axe" should not be confused with a particular type of axe also called "squaring axe" or "blocking axe". See the "Dictionary of Tools" by R.A. Salaman.

OBS

According to "Terminology of Forest Science, Technology Practice and Products (FOFOR), "broad axe" is used in Australia and in New Zealand.
