DEF

A molded-plastic or wire covering for the face securely fastened to the helmet and worn as protection by goalers in team sports and by players or competitors in some team or individual sports.

CONT

[The] face guard [is] available in clear plastic and cage type, [it] must be securely fastened to the helmet so that it will not make contact with the face.

OBS

Jacques Plante, a goaler for the hockey team "Le Canadien de Montréal", is the first hockey player to have worn a mask in the 1960’s. The practice became popular to the point that now every goaler wears a complete "mask" while many offensive players wear a "face shield, guard or protector" attached to their helmet, hence the difficulty distinguishing among the different terms. The idea is now accepted by players in many sports: ice, field or roller hockey, short-track speed skating, ringette, etc. The protection worn by the receiver in baseball stands in the same category.

DEF

CONT

Common four-sided shaped wire, such as squares, oblongs or keystone shape, are frequently produced on cold-rolling equipment known as "Turks-head" machine. This consists of four hardened-steel rolls set in planes at right angles to each other. The narrow face of the rolls, as set in the framework, is adjustable on the same plane so that the assembly of the overlapping roll edges facing each other will project the contour of the opening so formed, into the desired shape of the cross-section of the wire to be made. The process wire, of a size somewhat larger than the finished size desired, is pointed and pulled through the Turks-head, being thus rolled to shape and size, after which it is coiled on a regular wire-drawing take-up block.

CONT

The Turks Head is a metal forming machine. It may be compared to an adjustable draw die but is actually infinitely adjustable within its limiting dimensions. ... The Turks Head utilizes two pair of rolls, one pair is arranged vertically and the other pair horizontally. In all types of Turks Heads, the rolls are infinitely adjustable.

OBS

CONT

The cross-staff-This is a long-established instrument but is less precise than the optical square... it consists of a brass box, octagonal in shape, about 75 mm deep and 60 mm broad. Down the centre of each face is cut a slot which contains a fine wire strained vertically. The staff can be fitted on the end of a ranging pole and be erected vertically. More properly, it should be attached to a tripod so that it can be placed exactly over a point on the ground by using a plumb-bob from the head of the tripod.

Slow-speed plows equipped with stepped knives generally cut only in one direction, the cutting run being made at speeds of 15-20 ft/min and the return being made at 30-60 ft/min. In order to maintain productivity with the slow-speed plows it is necessary to take as deep a slice as possible during the cutting run and the depth of slice may vary from 6 to 12 in., according to the hardness of the seam. The machine is hauled along the face by a 7/8 in. diameter wire rope which is wound by a 40-h. p. electrically driven winch located in the tail gate. Slow plows have been successfully used in conjunction with pre-cutting of the face but it appears that they will be superseded by rapid plows because of the greater productive capacity of the latter machines.

Rabot statique d'origine.
