CONT

On sheltered slopes near treeline, a layer of large surface hoar was formed over a weak and facetted upper snowpack. [Example approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee. ]

OBS

surface hoar: Ice crystals formed when water vapor from the atmosphere sublimates onto snow crystals at the surface due to a flux resulting from a greater vapour pressure in the air than the equilibrium vapour pressure of ice.

OBS

CONT

OBS

French

Domaine(s)
  • Phénomènes météorologiques, climatiques et atmosphériques
CONT

Record 6 2006-12-19

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric, Climatic and Meteorological Phenomena
DEF

A snow grain with flat faces separated by sharp corners.

CONT

Solid faceted crystals are those in which the original crystal form is often no longer discernible and the crystals begin to take on an angular, faceted or striated appearance with straight edges and angular corners beginning to predominate. Faceted grains typically tend to be larger grains and are often significantly larger than the grain from which they formed ... Commonly referred to as "facets" or "sugar snow" these grains tend to be found in softer or weaker snowpack layers. Faceted grains typically form when there is a strong temperature gradient in the snowpack (>1 degree/10 cm). This strong temperature gradient occurs most often in areas where the snowpack is shallow and temperatures are cold.

CONT

There is a weak layer of facets buried deep in the snowpack. [Example approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.]

OBS

When faceted crystals develop deep in the snowpack, they are usually referred to as "depth hoar" crystals. Because these angular, faceted crystals have relatively no internal cohesion or bonding, they behave much like sugar crystals and are frequently referred to as "sugar snow."

OBS

facet; facetted grain; facetted crystal : terms officially approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Phénomènes météorologiques, climatiques et atmosphériques
DEF

DEF

The surface on which an avalanche slides.

CONT

Slab avalanches are most often the greatest threat to backcountry travelers. There are two main components in the snowpack that need to be present for these to occur: a cohesive slab layer and a sliding layer underneath the slab (called the bed surface) which is characterized by poor layer bonding and low shear strength ...

CONT

Slab avalanches fall when a well-defined snow later breaks free and slides away. The sliding surface is usually the interface between distinguishable layers of snow which has been formed by variations in weather or snow deposition. In some cases the sliding surface may be the ground (entire snow cover avalanches).

CONT

The bed surface can be the ground (or older snow).

CONT

The bed surface of that avalanche was facetted grains. [Example approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee. ]

OBS

Not to be confused with "failure layer" or "failure plane."

OBS

bed surface; sliding layer: terms officially approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.
