Its main elements include: . wastes disposed of above grade; . an engineered concrete cover over the wastes; . structural stability provided by the walls and cross-walls of the facility; and . voids between containerized wastes filled with nonstructural material (bulk wastes are placed in the vault, uncompacted, by an enclosed-conveyor materials handling system through holes in the roof). One major reason for building an above-ground vault is that it allows for constant surveillance. ... Since any such facility would be exposed to the elements, natural decay would be a problem and constant maintenance would be required.

A vault is completely closed by placement of a concrete roof over each backfilled cell. The facility lacks any earthen cover system and relies principally on the structure to isolate the waste from the biosphere.

Hexapod is a support facility to be mounted on an EXPA of the ISS. The facility will be used for the Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment III(SAGE III). The facility has a bottom plate and a top plate. The two plates are connected by 6 linear actuators. Hexapod receives the pointing data from SAGE III and the actual base position from the ISS-EXPA. From this data the HEXAPOD control algorithm calculates the next position for each leg. Each linear actuator is driven by a double winding Brushless DC Motor, while the position is monitored by an incremental encoder. To sustain the launch load a launch support structure has been designed, which is released by dedicated electromechanical devices. Hexapod is controlled by a dedicated electronic unit... which interfaces to the Station via the MIL BUS 1553B.

The International Space Station's Centrifuge Accommodation Module will take life on a spin in space to achieve experimental results that can be brought down to life on Earth. Unique among ISS [International Space Station] modules, this one will permit long-term study of the effects of varying gravity levels on the structure and function of generations of living organisms and test methods for countering the negative results of those variations. Within the Protein Crystal Growth facility, pure protein solution is exposed to a substrate, which draws the liquid out of the protein solution, leaving crystallized proteins behind. The precise structure of the proteins may be determined by diffracting X-rays off the crystal to create a visual image of the molecular structure of the protein. A vault is completely closed by placement of a concrete roof over each backfilled cell. This project was the first major work in areas like office automation and text processing.... One part of the augment project was NLS(for oN-Line System), which had several hypertext features even though it was not developed as a hypertext system. During the augment project, the researchers stored all their papers, reports, and memos in a shared "journal" facility that enabled them to include cross-references to other work in their own writings. This journal grew to over 100, 000 items and is still unique as a hypertext structure for support of real work over an extended time.

For occasions when a student wants to understand the structure of a control component in details, STEAMER has a facility called the feedback minilab(Forbus, 1984a), where simulated devices can be assembled and tested. On the minilab's screen, the student has a menu of icons representing abstract functions typical of control devices, such as measuring subcomponents or comparators. She can select these abstract components and assemble them on the screen to construct her own control devices. The minilab is then able to generate code from subcomponent specifications to produce a simulation program for the device. Hence, once a controller has been constructed graphically in this way, it can be integrated into a simulation so that its effects on the embedding system can be observed. As implemented, the minilab has limited tutorial capabilities : it can critique the student's device by locating common bugs and recognizing some instances of known devices. Its pedagogical significance lies in its definition of abstract components in terms that allows simulated devices to be built. It is very important for students to acquire this vocabulary of functional abstractions, and the minilab helps root the abstractions’ meaning in direct experiments.
