A right or permission granted in accordance with law by a competent authority to engage in some business or occupation, to do some act, or to engage in some transaction which but for such license would be unlawful ...

OBS

The term "licence" is not invariably translated by the French "licence" although it is in most cases. The reason is that in English the term does not necessarily imply a business or occupation as does the French :"driver's licence" and "marriage licence" are examples of this. One must therefore be careful in translating "licence"--its usual French equivalent is "licence", but in some cases it can be "permis". An important characteristic distinguishing "licence" from "permit" is the fact that the former is not issued directly by the government but rather by a competent authority or by local authorities, while any of the three groups mentioned can issue a permit. Also, the licence is usually granted for an extended period of time whereas the permit normally authorizes an act of short duration. For example, we say "driver's licence", but "learner's permit".

OBS

In Canada the British spelling (licence) is used more often than the American spelling (license), although both are found in Canadian texts.

OBS

"Licence" is one of two words that in Canadian English are usually spelled differently as nouns and verbs. The preferred spelling for the noun is "licence" and for the verb "license" ... The spellings of the other word are "practice" and "practise".

The fact that the word "status" does not restrict the statute in the manner proposed by the appellants is clear from the way the term has been qualified in the case law, and in the submissions of the parties. The very issue in this appeal has been characterized as whether s. 5(1) of the Code includes complaints based on "relative status" as opposed to "absolute status". The essence of the appellants’ argument is that the ordinary meaning of the word "status" refers to an absolute condition; the inclusion of relative status within the scope of the definition would require the addition of a qualification. We cannot agree. The word "status" is equally capable of encompassing both the absolute definition and the relative definition. Moreover, the terms "marital status" and "family status" are in themselves relative. That is, they require the existence or absence of a relationship with another person. To restrict its meaning to the absolute would ignore the very condition that brings the status into being in the first place.

With the stock market's downward slide, many employers are finding themselves caught in deep water on the issue of stock options. As companies’ stocks dive, the employees they retained and lured with options are waking up to the fact that the current price of the stock has sunk below the exercise price of their options. In current parlance, those options are "underwater".... Some may, for instance, reprice their underwater options or cancel them and issue new ones.

CONT

By far, the best approach to dealing with underwater stock options is to educate and remind optionees that their stock options are a long-term compensation device and that the typical 10-year option term allows more than enough time for their options to come back to life.

In seeking to broaden the problem [homelessness] from a "women’s concern" and to raise men’s awareness, the Forum [against Oppression of Women] has become part of a nation-wide alliance of NGOs [non-governmental organizations], lobbying national government for a National Housing Charter.

The problem of the negligence and abuse of women's rights being seen simply as a "women's issue" is already clear. There is practical evidence that issues such as sexual harassment and abuse, rape, sexual abuse of children and wife battery are seen as women's issues... despite the fact that men are clearly involved...

license : A right or permission granted in accordance with law by a competent authority to engage in some business or occupation, to do some act, or to engage in some transaction which but for such license would be unlawful... Finally, note that in Canada the British spelling(licence) is used more often than the American spelling(license), although both are found in Canadian texts.

La «licence» [concerne] obligatoirement une activité commerciale ou professionnelle, alors que le «permis» [peut] être décerné pour l'exercice d'une activité non commerciale [...] voire sportive ou ludique [...] De plus, la «licence» est attribuée par l'Administration ou par une autorité administrative, et non par l'État, tandis que le «permis» est délivré par l'un ou l'autre de ces trois groupes.

By 1920 most of the naturally occurring [alpha]-amino acids had been identified in hydrolyzates from crystalline proteins. Yet, the scientific community was far from adoption of a structural theory that would explain how enzymes are assembled from amino acid building blocks. In fact, the crystallization and characterization of urease as a protein by Summer... in 1926 drew much scepticism from others who viewed the crystalline protein merely as an inert carrier of the catalytic agent. The issue was clouded by the recognition of other, nonprotein molecules closely associated with enzymes(prosthetic groups in today's terminology), and required for enzymatic activity. The identity of enzymes as proteins came conclusively from quantitative studies, such as partial proteolytic digestion and immunoprecipitation.... Today, X-ray crystallography is a vital tool for determining protein structure and its relationship to the catalytic action of enzymes.

Pendant de nombreuses années on pensa que les protéines étaient les macromolécules biologiquement les plus importantes, ceci à cause de la découverte de la nature protéique des enzymes. Au début, la constitution des enzymes avait donné lieu à une controverse. S'agissait-il de petites molécules ou de macromolécules? Ce ne fut qu'en 1926 que la fonction enzymatique d'une protéine cristallisée fut démontrée pour la première fois par le biologiste américain Sumner; la controverse était alors pratiquement terminée.
