The term "baffling factor" is used to describe the degree of short-circuiting that occurs within a basin. Accurate BF allows the correct inactivation values to be calculated and allows optimized disinfection performance to be maintained. 4, record 1, English, - baffling%20factor
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Water does not flow through all treatment processes in a perfectly mixed condition. In some treatment units there can be substantial short circuiting. The disinfectant contact time(T), also referred to as T10,... is an estimate of the detention time within a basin or treatment unit during which 90 percent of the water passing through the unit is retained within the basin or treatment unit. T can be determined experimentally through a tracer study or it can be estimated based on a theoretical detention time(TDT) and baffling factor(BF).... Baffling factors(BFs) help estimate the contact time of a basin, pipe, or unit process based on the volume of and flow rate through the basin, pipe, or unit process. 5, record 1, English, - baffling%20factor

3, record 1, French, - facteur%20d%27efficacit%C3%A9%20hydraulique

The most unusual aspect of the [inner shell photoabsorption] spectrum is that the lowest energy peak, corresponding to the promotion of a ls electron to the first unfilled... orbital, has an area which is much greater(by a factor of the order of 10) than the sum of the areas of all the other discrete peaks below the ionization threshold. This is attributable... to the fact that the [first unfilled] orbital is highly localized, being confined to the vicinity of the molecular core by a centrifugal barrier in its d-wave component. The existence of this barrier is also well known from the work on shape resonances in electron scattering... 2, record 5, English, - shape%20resonance

In the STM [scanning tunneling microscope] the "aperture" is a tiny tungsten probe, its tip ground so fine that it may consist of only a single atom and measure just. 2 nanometer in width. Piezoelectric controls maneuver the tip to within a nanometer or two of the surface of a conducting specimen so close that the electron clouds of the atom at the probe tip and of the nearest atom of the specimen overlap. When a small voltage is applied to the tip, electrons "tunnel" across the gap, generating a minuscule tunneling current. The strength of the current is exquisitely sensitive to the width of the gap; typically it decreases by a factor of 10 each time the gap is widened by. 1 nanometer-half the diameter of an atom. 2, record 7, English, - tunneling%20current

Radiation damage in solids … Because the particles … have different energies and different ranges, the distance from the site of formation to the region where they cause damage is different. Thus, the size of the fissile kernels itself(also called inclusions) embedded in the inert matrix material becomes an important factor in determining the regions of damage in a material. To this end a distinction is made between a microdispersed and a macrodispersed fuel. A fuel is called microdispersed if the size of the fissile inclusions is less than 10 [micrometers], and otherwise is called macrodispersed. Microdispersed fuels can be produced either by infiltration or by compression of a mixture of matrix grains and fissile grains, while macrodispersed fuels can be produced by compression only. The damage effects in microdispersed fuels will approach those in a solid solution, while the radiation effects in macrodispersed fuels will mainly occur in the inclusions themselves and in a thin matrix layer around the inclusion, predominantly due to neutron damage. 1, record 9, English, - microdispersed%20fuel

3, record 11, French, - ambigu%C3%AFt%C3%A9%20en%20azimut

The Centre national d’études spatiales(CNES) is developing an atomic clock of unequaled precision, which will be launched in 2003 aboard the International Space Station(ISS). The PHARAO clock(Cooled Atom In-Orbit Atomic Clock Project)... uses cooled cesium atoms in order to reach an accuracy and stability 10 to 100 times higher than any other high-performance existing calibrating clocks. The Cesium atoms are thrown on a free flight in a cavity enabling interaction with a radio-frequency field. They then transfer their intrinsic accuracy and stability qualities to the piezoelectric oscillator. The lack of gravity increases the time in which the atoms interact with the piezoelectric oscillator, which then increases the resolution and accuracy of the clock by a 10 factor. PHARAO will belong to ESA's ACES(Atomic Clock Ensemble in Space) payload within the frame of one of its ISS program. The ACES mission will be divided in two parts. The first one, which should last six months, will mostly focus on the PHARAO clock performance. The second part of the mission will last 12 months and will allow the international scientific community to use the clock for specific experiments(clocks’ synchronization, General Relativity tests, geodesy, etc.). 2, record 19, English, - ACES%20mission

The advantage of CargoLifter is, that transport can take place in rural areas with little or no infrastructure. Transport times are cut by a factor of 10 and the complexity of the project is reduced significantly.... The loading cycle will take about half a day to unload and 3/4 days to load. The CargoLifter can take 72 TEU in a box, but the weight volume ratio is very low(1 : 20). The weight alone would account for 136t or 85% of the payload. The remaining 44t can take 2800 cubic meters of space(weight to volume of 1 : 62).... CargoLifter will use marine diesel engines and propellers for thrust. Installed power is expected to be 9. 3 MW, for a top speed of 135 km/h. The average speed will be about 100 km/h, which requires about 5 MW and an hourly fuel consumption of 1 tonne(specific fuel burn approx. 200 g/kWh). 3, record 25, English, - CargoLifter

All listeners except one showed a level disadvantage : The localization error rate increased with increasing level, on the average by a factor of 10 over the range of levels. It was conjectured that the level disadvantage arises from a failure of the auditory system to resolve details of the spectral shaping caused by pinna, head, and upper torso in the case of a high-level pulse.... The upgrading process for Cold Lake heavy oil is likely to be quite similar to the upgrading of the 6 to 10°API Athabasca deposits where a factor of 0. 70 is being realized in converting surface bitumen to synthetic crude oil. Employing a surface conversion factor of 0. 70, therefore, the ultimate recovery range expressed in terms of synthetic crude is estimated to be in the range of 15 to 30 billion barrels. 1, record 38, English, - surface%20conversion%20factor

1, record 39, French, - %C3%A9quivalent%20calorifique
