English

Subject field(s)

  • General Medicine, Hygiene and Health
DEF

A study in which the investigators do not intervene, but only observe subjects who are(and sometimes who are not, for comparison purposes) exposed to a given factor, and interpret the outcomes.

OBS

This type of study is more subject to bias than is an experimental study such as a randomised controlled trial.

OBS

observational study: term and definition standardized by the Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Glossary English Editorial Board and the Translation Bureau.

French

Domaine(s)

  • Médecine générale, hygiène et santé
DEF

Immobilization can result in significant changes in the properties of enzymes in comparison with the properties of the soluble enzyme. It is likely that the properties of the immobilized enzyme are nearer to the in vivo properties since dilute soluble enzyme studies normally ignore the complex realities of the intracellular environment. Immobilized enzyme systems can simulate some of these realities, e. g. generation of localized microenvironment, diffusional restrictions, partitioning of substrates, products, coenzymes, etc.... Several workers have observed that the close proximity of the immobilized enzyme to its support matrix is a major contributing factor to changes in the properties of enzymes when they are immobilized.

Domaine(s)
  • Biochimie

CONT

... increasing community action/organization on a community-defined problem(both separate from and in conjunction with general heart health multiple risk factor reduction programs) will be more effective in reducing cardiovascular risk factors and in improving health status among individual participants than multiple risk factor reduction program alone. This would be tested by comparison of the "experimental" communities with similar communities(or a general population) that do not participate in a specific heart health inequality program. Longitudinal data, lag-time comparisons and cohort comparisons would form the basis of evaluation.
