DEF

The return for the use of a factor of production in excess of the minimum required to bring forth the service of the factor. The surplus remaining to a project beneficiary after he receives the rewards necessary to attract physical inputs, labor, entrepreneurship, and the willingness to bear risk.

CONT

The amount that a factor (of production) must earn in its present use to prevent it from transferring to another use is called its transfer earnings. Any excess over this amount is called its economic rent.

OBS

This concept was originally developed to apply to land but is now applied to all factors of production.

OBS

... in some technological processes the factor inputs work very intimately together, so that, when you increase only one of them, holding the others constant, you get zero extra product; and when you decrease one factor alone, you lose the whole product produced by both together. Only when you change both factors in combination do you seem to get a nice smooth curve of marginal-physical-product.

Record 3 2004-10-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Production (Economics)
CONT

Factors of production are those inputs employed in the production of goods and services. The factors are traditionally classified under four broad headings-capital, labor, land, and entrepreneurial ability. The factor returns(or payments) corresponding to these categories are respectively interest, wages, rent and profit.

OBS

production factors ... should not be confused with factors of production.

OBS

The above-mentioned terms are usually in the plural.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Production (Économie)
DEF

OBS

The "marginal product" of a productive factor is the extra product or output added by one extra unit of that factor, while other factors are being held constant. Several areas important to the analysis, but not examined in any detail, are the "disbenefits" of maintaining biodiversity(for example, health problems caused by biological resources) ;the opportunity costs associated with conservation activities, the social and other external costs associated with benefit production, and the opportunity costs of factor inputs.

CONT

It is known that the alkalinity of the lake water is the single most important factor in determining a lake's sensitivity, or its ability to neutralize acidic inputs.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Pollution de l'eau
CONT
