The process of solute movement into and out of the stationary phase or mobile phase. It is represented by the C term of the van Deemter equation and is referred to as the mass transfer term. The faster the process of mass transfer, the better the efficiency of the column. In HPLC, mass transfer is the most important factor affecting column efficiency. It is increased by the use of small particle packings, thin layers of stationary phase, low viscosity mobile phases, and high temperatures. 3, record 8, English, - mass%20transfer%20term

The analytical electron microscope(AEM) is based on a conventional 200 keV transmission electron microscope(TEM) which has been augmented to include the functions of a scanning transmission electron microscope(STEM) and the scanning electron microscope(SEM). Since the electrons must penetrate through the specimen, the specimen dimensions must be no greater than 1 micrometer thick, and preferably in the range of 100 nm. Bulk specimens may be thinned to this range by a combination of mechanical, chemical, and ion sputtering techniques, all of which are available in the microanalysis laboratory. As an imaging tool, the AEM is capable of 0. 3 nm spatial resolution in the TEM mode, 1 nm resolution in the STEM mode, and 3 nm resolution in the SEM mode. Elemental microanalysis is carried out by means of energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry(EDS) and electron energy loss spectrometry(EELS), which together provide sensitivity to all elements with atomic number > 2. Quantitative analysis is carried out by means of a relative sensitivity factor method based on glass, mineral, and metal alloy standards. 2, record 10, English, - analytical%20electron%20microscope

2, record 10, French, - microscope%20%C3%A9lectronique%20analytique

A very original set of experiments carried out by the Unit of Molecular Biology of Gene Expression concerns another protein essential for mouse development that is also a transcription factor. This factor known as KBF2 or RBP-Jk is homologous to a Drosophila gene product, Su(H)(Suppressor of Hairless), which belongs to the Notch signal transduction cascade involved in regulating the competence of a cell to respond to specific developmental cues. A likely function of the Su(H) protein is to serve as an anchor on DNA for non DNA-binding transcriptional activators. This function is conserved in the Notch pathway : the activation of this transmembrane receptor likely involves a proteolytic cleavage step which releases its intracellular domain; following nuclear translocation, it activates its target genes by binding to the Su(H) protein, which is already bound to several sites in the target promoters. 2, record 24, English, - Su%28H%29%20protein

The physicochemical basis of salting-out is rather complex; one factor is that the high concentration of salt may remove water of hydration from the protein molecules, thus reducing their solubility, but other factors are also involved. Whatever their physical basis, salting-in and salting-out are important procedures in the separation of protein mixtures, since different proteins vary in their response to the concentration of neutral salts. Proteins precipitated by salting-out retain their native conformation and can be dissolved again, usually without denaturation. Ammonium sulfate is preferred for salting out proteins because it is so soluble in water that very high ionic strengths can be attained. 2, record 26, English, - salting%2Dout
