Vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) is a protein produced by cells in your body. VEGF produces new blood vessels when your body needs them.... Sometimes cells can produce too much VEGF. When this happens, abnormal blood vessels can grow in your eye. These abnormal blood vessels damage your eye and harm your vision. This can lead to low vision or blindness. Anti-VEGF medicine blocks VEGF, which reduces leaking abnormal blood vessels in the retina. This slows or stops damage from the abnormal blood vessels and slows down vision loss. Sometimes it can even improve vision. Ophthalmologists use anti-VEGF medicines to treat [wet] age-related macular degeneration(AMD) ;[swelling] of the retina, called macular edema; [diabetic] retinopathy; [and retinal] vein occlusion. 6, record 1, English, - anti%2Dvascular%20endothelial%20growth%20factor%20drug

High ionic strength solutions of electrolytes do tend to cause the desorption of adsorbed proteins. The extent of this depends on the specific enzyme and support material involved, pH, temperature, and perhaps other variables... [Thus, ] an inherent snag in the use of physical adsorption for enzyme immobilization... is the reversible nature of the bonding of enzyme to support... One factor which often causes desorption is the addition of substrate to the enzyme preparation. This is a particular hazard, for although other factors which might cause desorption(such as fluctuation in pH, temperature, or ionic strength) can be controlled, no enzyme can work without its substrate. 3, record 25, English, - desorption

All three indices were derived for each climatological season (i.e., DJF [December, January, February], MAM [March, April, May], JJA [June, July, August] and SON [September, October, November) for the period 1881-1990 using daily grid-point sea level pressure data recorded at 5° latitude by 10° longitude intervals across the British Isles. 3, record 34, English, - climatological%20season

The Centre national d’études spatiales(CNES) is developing an atomic clock of unequaled precision, which will be launched in 2003 aboard the International Space Station(ISS). The PHARAO clock(Cooled Atom In-Orbit Atomic Clock Project)... uses cooled cesium atoms in order to reach an accuracy and stability 10 to 100 times higher than any other high-performance existing calibrating clocks. The Cesium atoms are thrown on a free flight in a cavity enabling interaction with a radio-frequency field. They then transfer their intrinsic accuracy and stability qualities to the piezoelectric oscillator. The lack of gravity increases the time in which the atoms interact with the piezoelectric oscillator, which then increases the resolution and accuracy of the clock by a 10 factor. PHARAO will belong to ESA's ACES(Atomic Clock Ensemble in Space) payload within the frame of one of its ISS program. The ACES mission will be divided in two parts. The first one, which should last six months, will mostly focus on the PHARAO clock performance. The second part of the mission will last 12 months and will allow the international scientific community to use the clock for specific experiments(clocks’ synchronization, General Relativity tests, geodesy, etc.). 2, record 36, English, - ACES%20mission

Ultra High Resolution Spectrometer(UHRS).... Laser spectroscopy has stimulated the development of spectrometers with improved performance and has led SOPRA to develop a new line of monochromators with ultra-high resolution. SOPRA has designed the mechanical parts in the most careful way to take the best advantage of the newest diffraction gratings. The instrument function of a monochromator is defined by the product : Resolution X Luminosity/Noise=RL/N. The resolution R directly depends on the diffraction grating and the focal length. The luminosity L depends on the area, on the efficiency of the grating, and on the slits. The noise N is essentially caused by the light scattered by the grating through the output slit and it diminishes when the focal length is increased. Another crucial quality factor of a monochromator is the ease to use it, i. e. its stability and reproducibility with regard to resolution and luminosity, and its tuning characteristics. 1, record 40, English, - ultra%20high%20resolution%20spectrometer

The advantage of CargoLifter is, that transport can take place in rural areas with little or no infrastructure. Transport times are cut by a factor of 10 and the complexity of the project is reduced significantly.... The loading cycle will take about half a day to unload and 3/4 days to load. The CargoLifter can take 72 TEU in a box, but the weight volume ratio is very low(1 : 20). The weight alone would account for 136t or 85% of the payload. The remaining 44t can take 2800 cubic meters of space(weight to volume of 1 : 62).... CargoLifter will use marine diesel engines and propellers for thrust. Installed power is expected to be 9. 3 MW, for a top speed of 135 km/h. The average speed will be about 100 km/h, which requires about 5 MW and an hourly fuel consumption of 1 tonne(specific fuel burn approx. 200 g/kWh). 3, record 45, English, - CargoLifter

Un système de grue intégrée permettra de charger et de décharger tout en maintenant l'appareil à une centaine de mètres de hauteur. Le Cargolifter mesurera 240 m de long et 61 m de diamètre. A technique that reduces image resolution before image compression commences to reduce compressed image sizes. As an example, one technique collectively replaces a group of dot values with its average. Dots averaged together reside in non-overlapping squares. A single averaged value replaces the collectively averaged dot values, reducing image dot counts, resolution, and PDF compressed image sizes. A downsample factor of 2 reduces both horizontal and vertical image resolutions by a factor of 4. 1, record 47, English, - downsample%20technique

Threads are designated by standardized notes. Under the unified system, threads are specified by giving in order the nominal diameter, number of threads per inch, the initial letters such as UNC or UNF that identify the series, and class of thread (1A, 2A, and 3A or 1B, 2B, and 3B).
