Oxidized form of haemoglobin that is unable to bind oxygen because the ferrous atoms of the haem group have been oxidized to their ferric state.

CONT

In the normal function of hemoglobin and myoglobin the iron atom does not undergo change in valence as oxygen is bound and lost; it remains in the Fe(II) state. However, both hemoglobin and myoglobin can be oxidized to the Fe(III), or hemin, form by oxidizing agents such as ferricyanide, with a change in color from red to brown. The respective products, which do not function reversibly as oxygen carriers, are called methemoglobin and metmyoglobin. In the cytochromes, however, the iron atom undergoes reversible changes between Fe(II) and Fe(III) forms; cytochromes serve as electron carriers, whereas hemoglobin and myoglobin act as ligand (oxygen) carriers.

Notice that there is no knob to set the heading of the DG [directional gyro] to match that of the compass. Why? Because it is slaved. Slaved? Back in the tailcone of the aircraft, away from all ferrous metal, is a magnetic compass. The output of this compass is electrically "enhanced" and amplified through a "flux gate"... This signal is fed to the HSI to drive the DG portion of the unit. What this means is that the reading is very accurate, not subject to the vagrancies of the regular magnetic compass, and is constantly being corrected for drift. On some aircraft, this signal is also used to slave the ADF heading card.

Ainsi les mouvements gazeux se compensent et la dérive est presque éliminée. De plus, on utilise un dispositif électronique supplémentaire qui mesure et compense la dérive résiduelle de sorte que seules des perturbations imprévisibles peuvent engendrer une erreur systématique.
