1, record 32, French, - autoprotection%20en%20%C3%A9nergie

The Mixedwood Plains ecozone consists of the St. Lawrence River valley of Quebec and Ontario and the inter-Great Lakes region of southern Ontario. The ecozone is the most populated in Canada and the most intensely developed.... The climate consists of warm summers and cool winters. Once heavily forested, the Mixedwood Plains ecozone contains the greatest variety of tree species in Canada, though only about 10% of the forests, mostly a mixture of coniferous and deciduous trees, remains. Though relatively small in land area, the ecozone is very important agriculturally. The fertile soils, warm growing season, abundant rainfall and gentle topography of rolling hills and level plains result in a very productive and varied agriculture. The ecozone contains the most productive soils in Canada. Dairy, beef, poultry and eggs, and grains and oilseeds are important agricultural commodities. Orchards, fruit and vegetable production and vineyards can also be found throughout the ecozone. 3, record 38, English, - mixedwood%20plains%20ecozone

Cladogenesis defines those cases of evolution in which one species develops into two or more through adaptation. The classic example is the different species unique to the Galapagos Islands, where small populations of creatures from South America evolved in response to their new ecosystem.... There is disagreement about what constitutes a new species, but it's generally agreed that if the mating of individuals from different populations cannot result in fertile and viable offspring, then they belong to different species. Cladogenesis explains the development of a large assortment of species from a smaller set of ancestral species through evolution. Unlike anagenesis, speciation through cladogenesis does not require the extinction of the ancestral population. Through successive cladogenetic splits, either with or without the extinction of the ancestral population, the total number of species increases over time. Cladogenesis is probably a more common form of evolution and speciation than anagenesis. 2, record 42, English, - cladogenesis

This is central to a theory of aging first developed by G. C. Williams in 1957. Williams suggested that some genes responsible for increased fitness in the younger, fertile organism contribute to decreased fitness later in life. One such example in male humans is the gene for the hormone testosterone. In youth, testosterone has positive effects including reproductive fitness but, later in life, there are negative effects such as increased susceptibility to prostate cancer. 1, record 53, English, - antagonistic%20pleiotropy

1, record 53, French, - pl%C3%A9iotropie%20antagoniste

In the past, many regions have produced high protein wheat without the need of fertilisers because of the high natural fertility of the soils. However as the age of cultivation increases, nitrogen fertility has declined requiring growers to add nitrogenous fertiliser, rotate with leguminous crops or use ley pastures to maintain crop yields and grain quality. 1, record 61, English, - high%20protein%20wheat
Record number: 61, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Because nitrogen is a primary constituent of grain protein, wheat of a high percentage protein is produced only where the crop is provided with an adequate nitrogen supply. So highly fertile soil is an essential ingredient for producing high quality wheat. The grain protein percentage is further modified by the grain yield of the crop. Increasing the yield of grain has a diluting effect on grain protein. This is why in dry seasons or seasons of low grain yield, a larger proportion of the crop is of a high protein percentage, whereas in seasons of high yield, wheat of high quality is in scarce supply. 1, record 61, English, - high%20protein%20wheat

This type of translocation occurs between two acrocentric chromosomes with breaks on opposite sides of the centromere in each chromosome and rejoining of the long arms. This usually results in the loss of a minute centric fragment, the formation of a new metacentric chromosome, and a reduction in chromosome number in the balanced heterozygote. (Abnormalities of the autosome-Group D) For instance, the short arms of a D group chromosomes can be deleted or duplicated without any obvious effect. "Robertsonian fusion" can take place between the long arms of two acrocentric chromosomes with loss of one centromere and short arms, resulting in normal and usually fertile heterozygotes who have no obvious loss of fitness and may have some selective advantage.(CLICYT p. 310) 1, record 62, English, - Robertsonian%20fusion

Using the calendar method, a woman records the length of her menstrual cycle over an eight-month period. Then, counting the length of the shortest cycle as the earliest likely day of menstruation and the length of the longest cycle as the latest likely day, she can calculate the fertile period. By subtracting 18 days from the earliest day and 11 days from the last likely day of menstruation, she obtains 2 figures which represent the commencement and conclusion of her fertile period. Outside this time, during her unsafe days, she must... avoid intercourse. 1, record 67, English, - calendar%20method

As a result, when using the BELE goat system, the recombinant protein of interest, purified from the milk, is available sooner. 4, record 75, English, - breed%20early%2C%20lactate%20early

2, record 81, French, - rendement%20biologique

Allotetraploids form when diploid gametes from different species fuse. Allotetraploidy is much more common than autotetraploidy and the individuals are usually fertile because if the two sets of parental chromosomes are sufficiently different they form 2n sets of bivalents rather than n sets of tetravalents. The bivalents, of course, are capable of ordinary meiosis, while the tetravalents will likely segregate irregularly. So allotetraploids usually behave at the chromosome level as if they were diploids even though at the genic level they are tetraploid for most loci. 2, record 85, English, - allotetraploidy

By no means did the Prague school restrict itself to phonology. Indeed, Roman Jakobson and his colleagues were driven by a lust to write about nearly every aspect of language, from phonology to poetry, and about a large band of languages as well. Invading the field of psychology, Jakobson(1941) sought to apply his interest in sound laws to a wide variety of populations. He discerned a sequence of sound development in normal children, one that follows what he called the law of maximal contrast; and he went on to demonstrate that this developmental progression is reversed in an orderly way as a result of damage to the human brain. Jakobson showed, furthermore, that the same kinds of contrast that had worked for the description of phonology could also be applied to choices made at other linguistic levels, ranging from syntax to pragmatics. And in a fertile methodological contribution, Jakobson pointed out that most linguistic contrasts are not equivalent or reversible. 1, record 90, English, - law%20of%20maximal%20contrast
