Intérêt du caractère discontinu du ralentissement (autoprotection en énergie). Quand on remarque les valeurs gigantesques que peuvent atteindre les sections efficaces au voisinage des pics des résonances, on peut craindre que les neutrons soient absorbés bien avant d'avoir pu se ralentir; comme ces absorptions sont pour l’essentiel des captures sans fission par l’uranium 238, cette crainte semble mettre en péril le concept même de réacteur à neutrons thermiques. En réalité, cette crainte n’est pas réellement fondée du fait que les résonances sont très élevées, certes, mais également étroites. Les neutrons se ralentissent de façon discontinue par diffusions en «sautant» d’une énergie à la suivante sans passer par les énergies intermédiaires : très souvent, ils évitent ainsi les «trappes» – les étroits domaines d’énergie où la section efficace est grande et où ils risqueraient d’être absorbés –, sans «soupçonner» le danger auquel ils ont échappé. 1, record 1, French, - autoprotection%20en%20%C3%A9nergie
