FIRING SPEED [6 records]

Record 1 2011-06-16

Subject field(s)
  • Guns (Land Forces)
  • Guns (Naval)
CONT

The major problem to be solved with breechloading artillery was obturation : the sealing of the breech after firing to ensure that none of the gases generated by the burning of the propellant(initially gunpowder) escaped rearwards through the breech.... The second problem was speed of operation : how to close the breech before firing and open it after firing as quickly as possible consistent with safety. Two solutions were developed more or less in parallel : The "screw breech" block and "sliding wedge" or "sliding block. "

DEF

Gunnery fire at a moving target from a side angle while "leading" the target.

CONT

Secondly, the most common type of firing solution in high speed combat is a leading deflection shot. In this kind of shot, you lay down fire in front of your target and let him fly through the stream. But, with only about 20 rps in that stream, the odds of the target flying through it w/o taking any hits are quite high.

CONT

Le tir en déflection doit obéir aussi à des règles précises mais difficilement applicables en combat, les avions évoluant trop vite. C'est plus une sensation de toucher la cible qui déclenchera le tir qu'une position précise de la cible sur le collimateur [...]

In order to study the ozone layer, it is important to get instruments into this level of atmosphere. One method of doing this is to place the instruments in a rocket that lifts the instruments to the top of the ozone layer(48, 000 m) and lets them parachute back down to earth.... There are two important stages to consider in the rocket's ascent. The rocket will speed up while its engine is firing, and then slow down after the engine has shut off.

CONT

The future scientists and engineers will seek to measure radiation levels, audio frequencies, and light waves during the rocket ascent and descent.
