The application of [a] degaussing system started during the World War II to prevent the naval ships from magnetic mines and torpedoes. When the ship used to come near a magnetic mine or a magnetic torpedo, the magnetic field of the ship used to actuate the firing mechanism and cause the mine or torpedo [to] explode. Thus, degaussing systems were installed to counteract the ship's magnetic field by cancelling the changes in earth's field around the hull of the ship. 2, record 6, English, - degaussing%20system

The matchlock constituted the first mechanical device for firing.(...) For this improvement(...) two modifications of the hand cannon were necessary : the addition of a pan to hold the priming powder, which replaced the match in setting off the powder charge inside the barrel, and the addition of the serpentine, holding the match and thus freeing the hand of the shooter or his aide. These original matchlocks did not as yet include the leverage system worked by a trigger and indeed did, not have true "locks". Instead, the serpentine was a simple S-shaped arm pivoted in its center, the lower end serving as a handle by which the shooter moved the device manually. 1, record 10, English, - match

2, record 46, French, - surveillance%20de%20flamme

modulating fire. Varying the firing rate as the load varies. This results in longer burner operation because the firing rate is lowered as temperature or pressure builds up toward the cutoff point. Record number: 48, Textual support number: 2 CONT
There are four widely used operating configurations for gas fired appliances: modulating fire, on-off, hi-low, and multi-stage firing. Modulating fire is accomplished by mechanically varying the size of the gas admittance opening of one or more special "modulating" gas valves. With the gas valve completely open the boiler fires at it’s full fire rate. The unit is said to be at "full turndown" when it fires at it’s lowest firing rate. The "turndown ratio" is the ratio of full fire rate to full turndown firing rate and is a function of boiler design. A turn down ratio of 5:1 would indicate that a boiler is capable of a full turndown firing rate of 20% (5:1 (100% fire : 20% fire). 3, record 48, English, - modulating%20fire

2, record 48, French, - allure%20progressive

Oil furnaces. Indoor oil furnaces... are available in upflow, downflow, horizontal and low-boy configurations for ducted systems. They are also available as floor furnaces, wall furnaces, and free standing space heaters. Oil-fired outdoor furnaces and combination units are rare.... The ducted system, oil-fired, forced air furnaces are usually equipped with pressure-atomizing burners. The pump pressure and the orifice size of the injection nozzle regulate the firing rate of the furnace. Electric ignition is used to ignite the burners.... The combustion chamber and heat exchanger of oil-fired furnaces are normally formed as a common single chamber. It is formed from heavy gage steel into a welded assembly. The hot flue products flow through the inside of the heat exchanger into the chimney. The conditioned air flows over the outside of the heat exchanger and into the air supply plenum. 1, record 65, English, - oil%20furnace
