In the early years of the twentieth century many... ceramic manufacturers... adopted the technique of high-temperature firing and set up small design studios specifically for the use of artist-potters. Pottery designers thus benefited from having factory facilities and technical expertise close at hand, while in exchange the manufacturer gained an on-the-spot source of original design ideas.

White saltglazed stoneware with incised inscriptions, stylized flowers, birds, or rouletted patterns filled in with zaffer before firing. It was made between 1724 and 1776 in Staffordshire, and possibly at Liverpool and elsewhere in England. The technique was revived by Doulton in the 1870s, using black and brown pigments instead of blue.
