Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Contour ditch irrigation is also known as wild flooding. It consists of a series of ditches spaced 25 to 100 m apart. There is a slight slope along these ditches and usually, the downslope bank is lower so that the water, when checked, is not restrained from flowing into the field along the entire ditch. Sometimes, water release into the field is accomplished by making cuts through the down-slope bank or using siphons. Theoretically, in contour ditch irrigation the water moves down the slope as a uniform sheet. Successive ditches located down the slope pick up the surface runoff and redistribute it to lower portions of the field. 4, record 4, English, - contour%20ditch%20irrigation

3, record 4, French, - irrigation%20par%20rigoles%20de%20niveau

A flood plain is the relatively flat land beside a lake or river, naturally liable to flooding if any overflow occurs. It is really part of the water's living space, which it uses periodically to stretch and spread out. Floods are most destructive in that part of the flood plain known as the floodway, where the water flows fastest. ... levees are two-edged swords : when a flood overtops them, they turn into dams, trapping water on the very land they were built to keep dry. In short, flood-control structures eradicate small floods at the risk of making big floods bigger, and when they fail, they fail spectacularly. 1, record 22, English, - two%2Dedged%20sword

Quatitative sampling of the fish fauna at each of these sites was conducted quarterly over this 2%-yr period. In general, fish habitats in the flood mitigation drains, and especially those above flood gates, had more intensive surrounding land uses, less natural native fringing vegetation and, overall, were more highly disturbed than those in the natural tributaries.(Dialog Data Base). 1, record 23, English, - fringing%20vegetation
