Record 1 2023-04-04

English

Subject field(s)
  • Physical Geography (General)
DEF

A geomorphic component of terraces, flood-plain steps, and other stepped landforms consisting of the flat to gently sloping, topmost and laterally extensive slope.

OBS

Commonly a recurring part of a series of natural, step-like landforms such as successive stream terraces. Its characteristic shape and alluvial sediment composition is derived from the cut and fill processes of a fluvial system.

DEF

A wide structural depression between mountain ranges that is partly filled with alluvium.

CONT

The late-tectonic and post-tectonic sediments... include polymict conglomerates, breccias, arkosic sandstones and shales, often brownish or red in colour, formed in intermontane basins in the environments of piedmont, flood-plain, lakes and deltas.

CONT

Les bassins nucléaires isochrones sont déposés en concordance dans une dépression structurale appartenant à un seul système de plis alors qu'un bassin intramontagneux se rattache à un type voisin du précédent, mais dans le cadre d'une topographie moins mûre.

Record 4 2010-03-22

English

Subject field(s)
  • Geomorphology and Geomorphogeny
  • Hydrology and Hydrography
DEF

A plain bordering a river and subject to flooding.

CONT

A flood plain is the relatively flat land beside a lake or river, naturally liable to flooding if any overflow occurs. It is really part of the water's living space, which it uses periodically to stretch and spread out. Floods are most destructive in that part of the flood plain known as the floodway, where the water flows fastest. [Source : A brochure on floods published by Environment Canada. ]
