A crevasse splay is a geographical feature which forms when an overloaded stream breaks a natural or artificial levee and deposits sediment on a floodplain. This breach can cause large deposits that spread in a pattern similar to that of a river delta. In other words, coarser sediment is deposited first, close to the breach while finer sediment is carried farther to the edges of the crevasse splay. In cross section, the crevasse splay will result in graded deposits which may look like a Bouma sequence. 3, record 16, English, - crevasse%20splay

It is really part of the water’s living space, which it uses periodically to stretch and spread out. Floods are most destructive in that part of the flood plain known as the floodway, where the water flows fastest. [Under] certain conditions, flood-water farming was the only, and essential, method for producing crops in the desert. The intensity and number of floods determine the size of the area that can be sown. The large fluctuations from year to year make such farming a very precarious source of livelihood; in certain years, the floods may be rare or short-lived, and the soil will not be moistened to a depth that is sufficient to justify sowing. 1, record 31, English, - flood%2Dwater%20farming

Flood-risk maps are the primary tool that guides the sensible use of flood-prone lands. They indicate flood-risk areas, where floodwaters are likely to spread. Municipalities can thus determine where to allow construction of floodproofed homes and other structures.... Usually [flood-risk maps] are colour-coded and delineate the major topographical features of the floodplain; the river's normal water surface; nearly man-made structures; the area with the severest risk of flooding(the floodway) ;and the area with the less severe risk of flooding(the floodway fringe). 1, record 37, English, - flood%2Drisk%20map
