Puffed cereal products are prepared by placing the material in pressure cookers or puffing guns.

OBS

The guns, so-called, are pressure vessels about 6 in. in diameter and 30 in. long. They are provided with a steam inlet, a bleed-off valve, and a means for heating the gun-usually by a gas flame. A charge of pellets [made from cereals] at 11 to 12% moisture is dropped into the open end of the gun from a gravity chute leading from the storage bins on the floor above. The end of the gun is sealed by a trip-valve. All valves are closed, sealing the gun. If the gun is heated by gas flames, it is slowly rotated while the temperature, and consequently the pressure, is slowly built up. The temperature may reach 500 to 800 degrees F, and the pressure at the end point may be 100 to 200 psi.... When the pressure reaches the necessary level, the end of the gun is suddenly opened by a trigger mechanism. The contents explode... into a cage or bin with a floor opening leading to a conveyor belt.

The conveyorized platform system is a totally automated system in the line of GERBERcutters. It consists of a conveyor cutting system placed on top of an electrically motorized platform. This enables the system to ride on floor mounted tracks from one spreading table to the next.... The operating procedure for the platform system is to lay-up the spreading tables, move the platform system to a spreading table and then pull the lay onto the cutting surface until the vacuum grabs it. The bite feed process will cut the lay and move it onto bundling tables. After the last bite is positioned and as the cutter continues to cut, the platform moves to the next prepared table for acceptance of the next lay.

Such storages usually have a flat floor with a tunnel reclaim conveyor system, similar to large flat-bottomed tanks. Occasionally a warehouse-type storage will have its floors sloped into the ground to provide a gravity discharge to the tunnel conveyor.

When the scale floor indicates that the appropriate garner is empty, the valve at the bottom of the unloading pit is activated. The grain discharges onto a conveyor belt and is transferred to the boot of the receiving leg. En route it passes under a large electro magnet which removes all ferrous metal from the grain. An automatic sampler, operating under the supervision of the Grain Commission's Inspection Division, takes a representative sample of each carload before it reaches the receiving leg.

The storage buildings are also dilapidated. They have a floor sloping at around 5° to a central unloading conveyor. The floor is constructed from asphalt with perforated metal strips at about 1 metre intervals to provide underfloor ventilation. The strips are each connected to an axial fan outside the building, but each runs right to the edge of the building so the bulk of the ventilation air will take the path of least resistance and escape up the walls of the building. The asphalt floor is in very poor condition.

A trade name for a heavy caterpillar-mounted continuous miner for operation in thick seams. The front end contains two cutter-arms which rotate in opposite directions to sweep the coal they cut inwards towards the centre. The broken coal is taken back through the machine to a chain conveyor. Two cutter chains are arranged at roof and floor level behind the arms to cut down the coal left between the rotating arms. The machine cuts an area 12 ft wide and 7 ft high. Power is supplied by two motors, one of 70 h. p. and the other 25 h. p. It has a continuous capacity from 3 to 3 1/2 t. p. m. This machine has been subject to several modifications.

A longwall cutter-loader of the plough type, with two cutting blades, one at each end, operated by a hydraulic cylinder which can give a powerful thrust(about 42 tons) to the blades and cause them to bite into the coal. While this thrust is being exerted, the machine is anchored by means of a vertical jack which engages the roof and floor. The jack is built on sliding bars and the machine is moved by sliding the jack along the bars to the next position for anchoring the machine. It travels alongside the conveyor but is not connected to it. A loading ramp guides the cut coal on to the conveyor. The machine is employed in seams from 4 to 5 ft thick with a strong roof and floor.

La firme Mavor et Coulson construit une machine appelée Samson stripper qui abat le charbon par arrachement d'un copeau épais (environ 60 cm) chargé directement dans le convoyeur de taille. La machine est automotrice. Elle comprend un moteur qui entraîne une pompe à huile agissant sur une unité de propulsion. Celle-ci est formée d'un étançon vertical à double effet qui coince la machine entre mur et toit et d'un cylindre horizontal muni d'un piston également à double effet. Le piston horizontal porte, à chacune de ses extrémités, un coin d'attaque qui peut exercer sur le massif une pression de 42 t. La réaction est supportée par l'étançon vertical. On desserre ensuite l'étançon de sorte que le bâti de la machine repose de tout son poids sur le mur et que l'unité de propulsion devient libre de glisser de 80 cm afin de se préparer à effectuer un nouveau cycle d'avancement.

A rapid plough for use on longwall faces. The machine is superior to the original Loebbe Hobel and can negotiate small faults or washouts on the face by the use of more than one plough. It is suitable for seams from 2 to 8 ft thick, with reasonably good roof and floor. The plough travels along the face at a speed of 75 f. p. m. with a cutting depth from 1 1/2 to 3 in. and the broken coal is loaded by the plough-shaped body on to an armoured conveyor. Drum shearer. The shearer has two cutting wheels that can be positioned from the roof to the floor of the coal. The shearer moves on the tracks on the conveyor frame while the wheels cut and load the coal on the conveyor. After the drum shearer has gone by a section of supports the positioning cylinders are actuated, pushing the face conveyor the width of the shearer cut closer to the face. The supports are moved one at a time after the face conveyor is in its new position.
