FLOOR FURNACE [9 records]

Record 1 2007-08-03

English

Subject field(s)
  • Burners and Steamfitting
  • Biomass Energy
DEF

A type of biomass combustion burner in which a pile of fuel burns on the grates.

OBS

Primary combustion air comes from above the grates, not below.

CONT

The boilers are fed wood fuel from the main fuel bin located adjacent to the boiler house. The boilers are the "pile burner" type, which burn wood in a large pile on the floor of a refractory lined furnace box. Combustion efficiency with this type of boiler is generally low but pile burners are simple and therefore relatively inexpensive. Low combustion efficiency also means that emissions such as particulates and carbon monoxide are relatively high. One notable advantage to these systems is that high moisture content fuels can be burned as well as "dirty" fuels containing debris.

CONT

Pile burner: Boilers incorporating a pile burning design find applications where the anticipated wood fuel has a high (up to 65%) relative moisture content, as is found in whole green tree chips, bark, and green mill residue. Grates serve to support the fuel, and underfire air flowing up through the grates provides oxygen for combustion, cools the grates, promotes turbulence in the fuel bed, and dries the fuel. The most common form of pile burning is the Dutch oven, which was used almost exclusively during the early part of the century (Guinn and Turner 1990).

CONT

Gravity furnaces have the air passages through the casing and over the heat exchanger more generously proportioned so that the buoyancy force created by the air being warmed furnishes the motive power to circulate the air through the ducts. Floor furnaces are a variation of the gravity furnace and are designed to fit flush with the floor and distribute the heated air directly into the living area. Models that incorporate a means of forced air circulation are available.

Subject field(s)
  • Heating
DEF

Warm-air heating system that depends on the difference in density between warm and cold air for the circulation of air throughout the system.

OBS

Early warm-air systems delivered air to and from rooms by gravity circulation in large ducts connected to the furnace in the basement. Since the only force producing circulation was that due to the small difference in density between the hot supply air and the cold return air, a satisfactory volume of air could be moved only by providing very large air ducts and registers and heating the air to a high temperature. The result was a very bulky system that produced hot air at the ceiling and cold air on the floor.

CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Ovens, Furnaces and Boilers (Heating)
DEF

Furnace in which the circulating air flows upward, discharging at or near the top of the casing.

CONT

The upflow or high-boy furnace has the blower beneath the heat exchanger discharging vertically upward. Air enters through the bottom or the side of the blower compartment and leaves at the top. Such furnaces may be used in closets and utility rooms on the first floor of homes or in basements with the return air ducted down to the blower compartment entrance.

OBS

Furnaces for forced air systems are available in various designs.... In addition, each is usually classified in terms of the direction in which the air is delivered. The three basic types are upflow, counter flow and horizontal, and there are several variations depending on the actual installation.

Such furnaces may be used in closets and utility rooms on the first floor of homes or in basements with the return air ducted down to the blower compartment entrance.

CONT

The three basic types [of forced air furnace] are upflow, counter flow and horizontal, and there are several variations depending on the actual installation.... The highboy (upflow) furnace is used primarily in single-level homes when the ducts are placed in the attic. This may be because of the slab on grade construction or because there is limited crawl space. The furnace may be located in a closet or recessed area in the wall. The air enters the furnace through a low side entry or through the bottom, and it leaves through the top.

OBS

Among the principal types [of forced-air furnaces] used for residences and small buildings the following arrangements are common: ... High-boy arrangement with up-flow of air, in which the blower is located at the bottom of the casing and the heat exchanger is located at the top.... High-boy arrangement with down-flow of air, in which the blower is located at the top of the casing and the heat exchanger is located below the blower.

Oil furnaces. Indoor oil furnaces... are available in upflow, downflow, horizontal and low-boy configurations for ducted systems. They are also available as floor furnaces, wall furnaces, and free standing space heaters. Oil-fired outdoor furnaces and combination units are rare.... The ducted system, oil-fired, forced air furnaces are usually equipped with pressure-atomizing burners. The pump pressure and the orifice size of the injection nozzle regulate the firing rate of the furnace. Electric ignition is used to ignite the burners.... The combustion chamber and heat exchanger of oil-fired furnaces are normally formed as a common single chamber. It is formed from heavy gage steel into a welded assembly. The hot flue products flow through the inside of the heat exchanger into the chimney. The conditioned air flows over the outside of the heat exchanger and into the air supply plenum.
