With the advent of better graphic displays and faster computers, virtual reality and augmented reality have become an area of intense research with the expectation that substantial benefits can be derived from the ability to simulate or augment reality with computer-generated visual graphics. One such system is known as cave automatic virtual environment(CAVE) in which a large theater is situated within a larger room where the walls of the room or "cave" are made of rear projection screens and the floor is a down projection screen. A user of the virtual environment wears special glasses to see 3-D [tridimensional] graphics on the walls and floor of the cave.

The Canadian Forest Fire Weather Index(FWI) System consists of six components that account for the effects of fuel moisture and weather conditions on fire behavior. The first three components are fuel moisture codes, which are numeric ratings of the moisture content of the forest floor and other dead organic matter. Their values rise as the moisture content decreases. There is one fuel moisture code for each of three layers of fuel : litter and other fine fuels; loosely compacted organic layers of moderate depth; and deep, compact organic layers. The remaining three components are fire behavior indices, which represent the rate of fire spread, the fuel available for combustion, and the frontal fire intensity; these three values rise as the fire danger increases.

A long box-shaped net that extends to the shoreline and is used to catch cod.

The cod trap is basically a room, with four walls and a floor, constructed of netting. Fish enter the trap through a doorway in the front wall. Extending outward from the centre of the doorway is a long wall of netting which, because of its function of leading fish into the trap, came to be called the leader. The trap is kept upright in the water by floats placed along the top of the walls, and lead weights at the bottom. It is held on location by a system of corner ropes anchored to the sea bottom.

The unloading process commences when cars are spotted on tracks leading to a terminal' s trackshed.... The car is spotted over the unload position in the trackshed by a winch(cable carhaul), or by a shunt engine. It is then unloaded. An ex-vessel steam explosion may occur if the primary system is breached by hot debris. Debris in the reactor outlet piping may fail the piping and fall onto the pump room floor or debris on the reactor vessel bottom may be blocked from flowing into the outlet piping if it freezes in the effluent piping nozzle muff structure. If this occurs, the debris will heat up on the reactor vessel bottom and eventually fail the bottom shield. The likely mode of failure of the bottom shield is collapse of the shield as a whole. If it collapses, the entire shield, as well as the molten debris, will fall into the pin room below the reactor vessel. The debris will then flow across the floor into the pump room. In either event, a large portion of the reactor fuel inventory will be deposited on the pump room floor. The pump room floor will be covered with water in many scenarios. A steam explosion may result when the debris enters this water.

The New York Mercantile Exchange(NYMEX) is the world's largest physical commodity futures exchange located in New York City. Its two principal divisions are the New York Mercantile Exchange and the New York Commodities Exchange(COMEX) which were once independent companies but are now merged. The New York Mercantile Exchange, Inc. is currently a large private company. The New York Mercantile Exchange handles billions of dollars worth of energy products, metals, and other commodities being bought and sold on the trading floor and the overnight electronic trading computer system. The prices quoted for transactions on the exchange are the basis for prices that people pay for throughout the world. In 1933, the COMEX was established through the merger of four smaller exchanges : the National Metal Exchange, the Rubber Exchange of New York, the National Raw Silk Exchange, and the New York Hide Exchange. On august 3, 1994, the NYMEX and COMEX finally merged under the NYMEX. Now, the NYMEX operates in a state of the art trading facility and office building with two trading floors in the World Financial Center in downtown Manhattan.

Typically, each [shallow land burial] trench has a sloping floor cut into the natural soil and a French drain of gravel down one of the long sides. The trench bottom is covered with a foot or two of sand to allow water to flow freely into the French drain, especially when the trench is open during operations. Sampling pipes or tubes are placed against the trench wall, with their lower ends in the French drain, when the trench is dug. Monitoring of each disposal unit (engineered trench) is accomplished by sampling any water found in the French drain through these tubes and analyzing its contents. Sampling wells are placed around the perimeter of the facility, and elsewhere if desired, and air sampling is conducted at least until the end of the operations.

Warm-air heating system that depends on the difference in density between warm and cold air for the circulation of air throughout the system.

OBS

Early warm-air systems delivered air to and from rooms by gravity circulation in large ducts connected to the furnace in the basement. Since the only force producing circulation was that due to the small difference in density between the hot supply air and the cold return air, a satisfactory volume of air could be moved only by providing very large air ducts and registers and heating the air to a high temperature. The result was a very bulky system that produced hot air at the ceiling and cold air on the floor.

Oil furnaces. Indoor oil furnaces... are available in upflow, downflow, horizontal and low-boy configurations for ducted systems. They are also available as floor furnaces, wall furnaces, and free standing space heaters. Oil-fired outdoor furnaces and combination units are rare.... The ducted system, oil-fired, forced air furnaces are usually equipped with pressure-atomizing burners. The pump pressure and the orifice size of the injection nozzle regulate the firing rate of the furnace. Electric ignition is used to ignite the burners.... The combustion chamber and heat exchanger of oil-fired furnaces are normally formed as a common single chamber. It is formed from heavy gage steel into a welded assembly. The hot flue products flow through the inside of the heat exchanger into the chimney. The conditioned air flows over the outside of the heat exchanger and into the air supply plenum.

Fournaise : Ce terme est considéré comme impropre par les puristes. Selon Dagenais, dans son "Dictionnaire des difficultés de la langue française au Canada", "fournaise" serait un calque de l'anglais "furnace" et nous devrions plutôt dire "chaudière" lorsque le fluide caloporteur est l'eau ou la vapeur et "générateur d'air chaud", lorsque le fluide, est l'air. Cependant, ce terme reste d'usage fréquent au Québec, autant en langue parlée qu'en langue écrite.
