Stock clerks maintain the order of stock rooms by receiving, unpacking, and inspecting merchandise as it arrives. They may tag items for inventory control and distribute merchandise to the proper location using a dolly or electric hand truck. In retail stores, stock clerks place new merchandise on sales floors, maintain its appearance, and replace damaged or expired items when necessary. They may also keep track of inventory, both on and off the sales floor, using hand-held scanners and computers.

[Fork Truck Construction. ] An important operational aspect of mast assemblies is freelift. Freelift is defined as the vertical distance forks can raise above the floor before the mast begins to extend from its collapsed height.

[Lift trucks. ] "Free lift" is the amount of movement the carriage can make before the cylinder yoke starts lifting the mast. A standard upright usually has just enough free lift to raise the load off the floor so the truck can go through a doorway without the top of the mast striking the door.

The amount of freelift available is dependent on the mast and truck design. Freelift may range from only a few inches on some models to over 60 in. (1500 mm) on the man-up turret truck. Most manufacturers offer trucks with either standard or "high" freelift available.

The low-lift elevating platform truck is constructed with the forward wheels located under the lifting platform and attached to the main frame. The rear wheels, which are larger, are the drive wheels and are also mounted directly on the main frame. A second framework is incorporated in the truck by means of a linkage system so that when the truck platform is placed under the loaded skid and power is applied to the lifting mechanism, the platform... raises the skid and the load from the floor and holds it in this position for transportation.

The first automotive lab to feature a full-scale, moving-base driving simulator that tracks drivers’ eye movements while using onboard gadgets and trying to maneuver curves on simulated highways.

The VIRTTEX simulator is a large spherical chamber held 11 feet off the floor by six computer controlled hydraulic rams. The computer operator monitors the simulator as it moves up, down, and back and forth to simulate acceleration, braking, and turning maneuvers. Inside the chamber, bolted to the floor is a full size 2001 Taurus, with the drivetrain, fuel system, and airbags removed. Almost any car or truck that Ford makes can fit into the simulator, enhancing the realism of the testing.
