Choosing an external breast prosthesis after a mastectomy is one option for women who either elect to wait to have breast reconstruction or who choose not to have the additional surgery. An external breast prosthesis is an artificial breast form that can be worn after a mastectomy to help balance the body and anchor the bra on the side of the mastectomy from riding up, which helps prevent back and neck pain and a sagging shoulder. Breast prostheses are custom-made for most women and are made from several different types of material(such as silicone gel, foam, and fiberfill) that feel similar to natural breast tissue and are usually weighted so they feel the same as the remaining breast. Some prostheses adhere directly to the chest area and others fit into pockets of postmastectomy bras, which are fitted with pockets on the inside to hold the device in place. 1, record 11, English, - external%20breast%20prosthesis

A subdivision of physical chemistry comprising the study of phenomena characteristic of matter when one or more of its dimensions lie in the range between 1 nanometre and 1 micrometre. The science includes not only finely divided particles but also films, fibers, foams, pores, and surface irregularities. It is the dimension that is critical, rather than the nature of the material. Colloidal particles may be gaseous, liquid, or solid, and occur in various types of suspensions(imprecisely called solutions), e. g., solid/gas(aerosol), solid/solid, liquid/liquid emulsion), gas/liquid(foam). In this size range, the surface area of the particle is so much greater that its volume that unusual phenomena occur; for example, the particles do not settle out of the suspension by gravity, and are small enough to pass through filter membranes. Macromolecules(proteins and other high polymers) are at the lower limit of this range. 2, record 16, English, - colloid%20chemistry

Injected foam has the advantage of providing good thermal resistance and resistance to the passage of air and water vapour, thus allowing installation in one stage using a single product... However, the foam has to be applied with great care, because the pressure created by overfilling may distort the frame and cause the window to jam or the glass to break. Polystyrene foam comes in two major categories, expanded bead, and extruded. Expanded bead foam is made by superheating small pellets of styrene so that they rapidly expand (sort of like popcorn) to form a low density foam. Expanded bead foam is light (about 1.5 pounds per cubic foot typically) and inexpensive, and because of the way it is made, lends itself to all types of molded products. It is the type of foam found in beer coolers and most contour packaging. It is also used as a cheap insulator. Because expanded bead foam has air pockets between the beads, it is less suitable for exterior use, for flotation, or for any application where water or water vapor can invade the air pockets between beads. 1, record 22, English, - expanded%20bead%20foam
Record number: 22, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Bead Foam. This material is produced from expandable polystyrene beads(granules)... There are two methods used in the preparation of the beads. In one, polymer granules are heated with a blowing agent(usually a hydrocarbon) that penetrates them. In the second method styrene monomer is polymerized in the presence of a blowing agent so that the blowing agent becomes entrapped in the plastic beads.... The expandable beads are converted to foam as follows. They are subjected to heating by steam, hot water or hot air to give pre-expanded beads; aged(or conditioned) for a period of time; the pre-expanded beads again heated(in a mould) so that they undergo additional expansion, flow to fill the interstices(spaces between particles) and fuse. This results in an integral moulded piece. 2, record 22, English, - expanded%20bead%20foam

1, record 22, French, - mousse%20moul%C3%A9e

The process in which a material, or an assembly of small, discrete units, is coated with, or embedded in, a molten film, sheath, or foam, usually of an elastomer. A foam-forming plastic may be used to fill the spaces between various electrical or electronic components so that they are embedded in and supported by the foam. Plastics and other materials used for this purpose are often called potting compounds. A specialized use of this technique is growing crystals for semiconductors, in which a coating of liquid boric oxide is the encapsulating agent. 1, record 35, English, - encapsulation

Partial threshold weatherstripping consists of a length of material, triangular in cross-section,(usually metal with a vinyl or closed-cell foam gasket) fastened to the floor on the exterior side of the door. When closed, the door butts against the strip, thus creating a seal even if there is no threshold directly beneath the door. In CATIR-E, 1983, no. 4, p. 33(Canadian Tire "Winter Shopping Guide"), this type of weatherstripping is described as a bumper. 2, record 36, English, - partial%20threshold%20weatherstripping

The pillow-type boot, also known as "balloon" boot, "puff" boot, or "sport" boot was introduced in the mid-70s to serve the needs of Canadian consumers. It is normally a boot six to ten inches in height above the sole, comprised of a warm lining, an interlining of polyurethane foam, and an upper of leather and/or man-made material such as polyurethane. The foam interlining is used throughout the boot and an additional thickness of foam is normally applied in the shaft. Stitching applied to the heavily insulated shaft gives the boot its distinctive appearance. 2, record 37, English, - puff%20boot

New safety foam for fuel tanks. The Foam division of the Scott Paper Company has developed an improved, explosion-suppressing polyurethane foam for the fuel tanks of military aircraft. The new material is said to offer more resistance to hydrolytic deterioration than foams currently in use. Scott Polyurethane Safety Foam is a reticulated polyurethane material manufactured by a special process in which virtually all the membranes or ’windows’ are eliminated from the conventional foam structure. 1, record 38, English, - reticulated%20polyurethane
