DEF

foam proportioner: A device using any of several means for mixing correct proportions of foam concentrate with water to generate air foam.

DEF

foam eductor; foam inductor; induction device: A venturi type device for drawing foam concentrate from a container in correct proportions and introducing it into a water stream.

CONT

Foam Concentrate Proportioners. In order that a predetermined volume of liquid foam concentrate may be taken from its source and placed into a water stream to form a foam solution of fixed concentration, the following two general method classifications are made : 1. Methods which utilize the pressure energy of the water stream by venturi action and orifices to induct concentrate.... Methods which utilize external pumps or pressure heads to inject concentrate into the water stream at a fixed ratio to flow.

Rôle : Mélanger à l'eau une quantité déterminée d'émulseur pour obtenir une solution moussante convenablement dosée. Certains sont réglés une fois pour toutes en usine, d'autres sont munis d'un dispositif de réglage du débit d'émulseur.

DEF

A type of foam concentrate proportioning system in which a pump and appropriate devices feed the concentrate to a metering orifice or controller at the same pressure as that of the water supply.

CONT

Balanced pressure proportioner : The use of a separate pump for transporting and pressurizing foam concentrate to be delivered in the correct proportions to a flowing water stream offers the greatest advantage for reliable and accurate operation of a foam concentrate proportioning system which must function at varying rates of volume or pressure during its use.... The balanced pressure system... relies on :(1) a hydraulically monitored pressure control valve in a bypass foam concentrate line from a pump, and(2) a correctly sized venturi-type proportioning controller in the water line for correct and automatic proportioning over wide ranges of flow.

CONT

Balanced-pressure proportioners and around-the-pump proportioners are both systems that are built into the apparatus fire pump. Apparatus equipped with a balanced-pressure proportioner have a foam concentration line connected to each discharge outlets. This line is supplied by a foam concentrate pump separate from the main fire pump. The foam concentrate pumps draws the concentrate from a fixed tank on the apparatus. This pump is designed to supply foam concentrate to a desired outlet at the same pressure at which the fire pump is supplyng water to that discharge.

DEF

A subdivision of physical chemistry comprising the study of phenomena characteristic of matter when one or more of its dimensions lie in the range between 1 nanometre and 1 micrometre. The science includes not only finely divided particles but also films, fibers, foams, pores, and surface irregularities. It is the dimension that is critical, rather than the nature of the material. Colloidal particles may be gaseous, liquid, or solid, and occur in various types of suspensions(imprecisely called solutions), e. g., solid/gas(aerosol), solid/solid, liquid/liquid emulsion), gas/liquid(foam). In this size range, the surface area of the particle is so much greater that its volume that unusual phenomena occur; for example, the particles do not settle out of the suspension by gravity, and are small enough to pass through filter membranes. Macromolecules(proteins and other high polymers) are at the lower limit of this range.

OBS

Though the term is often used synonymously with surface chemistry, in a strict sense it is limited to the size range mentioned in at least one dimension, whereas surface chemistry is not.

CONT

Hydrogen Release Compound (HRC) is a lactic acid ester that is manufactured by Regenesis. When delivered to the subsurface, lactic acid, which has been shown to be an effective electron donor, is released continuously into groundwater. Because this material can be injected directly into the subsurface it can be used to deliver nutrients passively and enhance active biodegradation of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (cVOCs).

CONT

Lactic acid ester is made from edible, fully hydrogenated vegetable fat. It improves foam stiffness in vegetable whipping creams and topping powder. Prevents bloom in chocolate and chocolate compound. Improves cake volume and provides uniform crumb structure in cake margarine and high ratio shortening.

CONT

There are three different types of foam proportioners commonly used in the fire service: line eductors, balanced pressure proportioners, and around-the-pump proportioners. The line eductor is the simplest and least expensive proportioning device. It has no moving parts in the water way, which makes it durable and dependable. The line eductor may be attached to the hoseline or may be part of the nozzle. There are two different types of line eductors: the in-line eductor and the self-educting nozzle. Both types of eductors use the venturi principle to draft foam concentrate into the water stream. As water at high pressure passes over a reduced opening, it creates a low-pressure area near the outlet side of the eductor. This low-pressure area creates a suction effect. The eductor pickup tube is connected to the eductor at this low-pressure point. The pickup tube submerged in the foam concentrate draws concentrate into the water stream, creating a foam water solution.
