Mucous cells(mucocytes) can occur singly or in clusters, and they have pale and sometimes foamy cytoplasm, a distinct cell boundary, and small, peripherally placed, compressed nuclei. Mucocytes often form the lining of cysts or duct-like structures. Occasionally mucocytes are so scanty that they can be identified with confidence only by using stains such as mucicarmine.

Record 7 2004-12-22

English

Subject field(s)
  • Microbiology and Parasitology
  • Animal Diseases
  • Viral Diseases
DEF

A retrovirus belonging to the genus Spumavirus of the family Retroviridae.

CONT

SFV [simian foamy virus] is so called because it causes cells to clump together and look, on a slide, like foamy bubbles. It has been called "a virus in search of a disease" and has been tentatively linked to several diseases but without any real evidence.

CONT

Simian foamy viruses are commonly found in primates(monkeys), cows, cats and other organisms.... About 70 to 90 percent of non-human primates born in captivity have SFV. Animals with SFV do not display symptoms or become ill. However, recent research suggests that some primates may be pre-disposed to other viruses after being infected with SFV. People who have had contact with non-human primates can become infected with SFV.

CONT

Like HIV [human immunodeficiency virus], SFV [simian foamy virus] is a retrovirus, a type that is particularly worrying because it can inject its own genetic material into the DNA of the cells that it infects, making it impossible to eradicate.... cross-species transmission of retroviruses and other pathogens could spark future epidemics similar to HIV.

CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Respiratory System
DEF

A syndrome of respiratory difficulty in newborn infants caused by a deficiency of a molecule called surfactant.

OBS

The mature lung contains a foamy fluid known as surfactant, a substance essential to expansion of the alveoli, or air sacs of the lungs. Because of their immaturity, premature babies tend to lack surfactant. Without surfactant, the lungs cannot inflate resulting in RDS [respiratory distress syndrome].

French

Domaine(s)
  • Appareil respiratoire
CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Packaging in Metal

DEF

... [A] plastic device inside aluminum cans... designed to help recreate the foamy head and taste of tap-dispensed beer.

CONT

The patented "smoothifier" - a small chamber with a tiny pinhole in it - is friction-fit to the inside bottom of aluminum cans .... beer is packaged into the cans at a higher pressure than typically used. Because of this, some of the liquid goes into the chamber. When the can is opened and the pressure is released, the liquid shoots out of the chamber and back into the can. This action agitates the beer.
