In 1990, The Conference Board of Canada established the National Business and Education Centre, now simply known as Education and Learning. The original goal of the department was to work with organizations to develop and promote Canada's education and learning systems. Over the years, Education and Learning has expanded its focus to cover the full range of education and learning that affects individuals and organizations in Canada. The Education and Learning group has grown to include strategic research in public education, employability skills, innovation through learning and workplace learning outcomes.

The Sustainable Development Research Institute(SDRI) was established in April 1991 to foster policy relevant research on sustainability. The Institute merged with the Institute of Resources and Environment in 2002 to form the Institute of Environment, Resources and Sustainability, within which SDRI remains as a research group. SDRI encourages interdisciplinary collaboration among faculty, departments and other centres at UBC, as well as other institutes and programs undertaking sustainability research in Canada and around the world. SDRI attempts to break away from the restrictions imposed by the traditional compartmentalization of research, and transcends disciplinary boundaries in its search for solutions. Our projects involve researchers from the natural sciences, applied sciences, health sciences, social sciences and humanities, working with partner organizations in the private, public and NGO sectors, with a strong focus on policy relevance and community engagement processes.

The Institute began life in 1958 when a group of prominent business and labour leaders organized the Private Planning Association of Canada to research and promote educational activities on issues related to public economic and social policy. The PPAC renamed itself the C. D. Howe Research Institute in 1973 following a merger with the C. D. Howe Memorial Foundation, an organization created in 1961 to memorialize the Right Honourable Clarence Decatur Howe. In 1981, the Institute adopted its current name after the Memorial Foundation again became a separate entity in order to focus its work more directly on memorializing C. D. Howe. The C. D. Howe Institute will celebrate its 50th Anniversary as the gold standard for public-policy research in 2008.

In 1995, the five federal government departments dealing with natural resources-Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Environment Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Health Canada and Natural Resources Canada-banded together to encourage collaboration and coordination in the use of science and technology for sustainable development. This group is known as 5NR. The 5NR gives a collective focus to the member departments’ mandates in an effort to protect the long-term health and diversity of all species, promote energy efficiency and clean technologies, and wisely manage and conserve renewable resources. The departments are working toward this goal by collaboration on research, sharing success stories and disseminating information.

En 1995, les cinq ministères fédéraux voués aux ressources naturelles, notamment Agriculture et Agroalimentaire Canada, Environnement Canada, Pêches et Océans Canada, Santé Canada et Ressources naturelles Canada, ont uni leurs efforts pour encourager la collaboration et la coordination dans l'usage de la science et de la technologie en vue du développement durable. Ce groupe est appelé les 5RN. Les 5RN confèrent un objectif commun aux ministères membres, qui consiste à s'unir pour protéger la santé et la diversité à long terme de toutes les espèces, à promouvoir des technologies propres et à haut rendement énergétique et à encourager une gestion judicieuse et la conservation des ressources renouvelables. Les ministères s'emploient à atteindre cet objectif en participant à des travaux de recherche en échangeant des histoires de réussite en diffusant de l'information.
