The ALLESP is a key part of the Government of Canada's future efforts to support adult learning, literacy and essential skills.

Since the focus is on presenting examples together with explanations prior to practice in problem solving, we term this learning strategy "example-driven".

The curriculum in interior architecture is structured for students who plan a professional career in space planning in commercial, institutional, and industrial interior design. The learning experience is gained through the focus placed upon the department's educational programs in interior architectural space planning, furniture, and product design. After an introduction to basic interior space planning, students undertake studio exercises that include programming and designing of spaces. Special emphasis is placed on spatial organization, behavior analysis, space component design, furniture design and construction, product and exhibit design, the integration of environmental systems, building rehabilitation, and the preparation of working drawings and contract documents.

A tutoring system that provides unobtrusive assistance while the student is involved in independent learning. It does not lecture, but fosters the learning inherent in the activity, points out existing learning opportunities and transforms failures into learning experiences. It motivates learning and exercises pedagogical judgement.

CONT

A diagnostic tutor compares the student’s behavior with that of an expert for the problem domain involved. When discrepancies arise, the student is given advice about better learning or performance strategies. Diagnostic tutors are usually a more appropriate form of ICAI [intelligent computer-assisted instruction] for games, simulations, and problem-solving situations than a mixed-initiative tutor approach.

CONT

... WEST and WUSOR, two early projects concerned with the design of coaching systems.

OBS

Coaches are a variant of tutors which simply monitor a student's problem-solving and so focus on a restricted part of the process of learning programming. Their job is to observe the way that a student tackles a problem and either comment when something seems to be going wrong, provide help when asked or... try to constrain the student to set about the problem in a particular way.

OBS

Contrast with "mixed-initiative dialog" system and with "directive tutoring".

The need for thoughtful learning is the basis for David Perkins’ conception of Smart Schools. Perkins argues : We need thoughtful learning. We need schools that are full of thought, schools that focus not just on schooling memories but on schooling minds. We want what policy analyst Rexford Brown in a recent study of schools called a "literacy of thoughtfulness. "We need educational settings with thinking-centered learning, where students learn by thinking through what they are learning about.

Problem-driven Learning.... the progression of models enables the system to present students with a sequence of problem solving situations that motivate the need for developing particular transformations of their models of circuit behavior. In solving new problems, the students attempt to transform their models of circuit behavior in concordance with the evolution of the system's models. The focus is on having students solve problems on their own, without providing them first with explanations for how to solve them. MHO(Lesgold et al., 1987) is a system for learning principles of electricity that supports both free exploration and guided problem solving. Its tutoring component exploits the curriculum organization to implement the concept of steering testing. When it takes control of the interaction, MHO dynamically generates tasks-electrical circuits and questions about them-that have to fulfil two conditions. First, observing the student's performance on each task should maximize the information made available concerning possible changes in her knowledge state. Second, each task should concentrate on elements of the curriculum that are in the current focus so that diagnostic information can direct the course of instruction.

Self's vision of formalizing teaching in terms of a student model is given a sharp focus in his work on concept teaching(Self, 1977). It differs from other projects by being a formal experiment on teaching rather than a teaching system. The domain is the acquisition of simple conjunctive concepts in a relational language close to first-order logic. An example of the concepts taught by Self's system would be R(x) T(y)("There is a rectangle and no triangle"). The target concept is taught through successive variable-free examples classified as positive or negative instances. For example, the tutor could say that R(a) T(b)("There is a rectangle a and a triangle b") is a negative example. Since the order in which the sequence of instances is presented greatly influences the time the student takes to converge on the correct concept, the idea is for the teacher to use a learning model to optimize its selection of examples.
