Local name for a foehn that blows from the south(Hungary) across the Tatra Mountains south of Krakow, Poland, and descends the northern valleys; similar to the Alpine south foehn.

OBS

It is sometimes stormy and may reach 20-25 m s-1(40-50 mph) in gusts, especially in spring and fall. It raises temperatures to as much as 14 °C above the normal for the season, and in winter and spring it causes avalanches. At Zakopane(in southern Poland) it sometimes blows as a high foehn. This wind occurs in front of depressions moving eastward in the Baltic.

Chinook is a Blackfoot word that translates to "snow eater", referring to, its ability to make winter snow packs vanish over a short time. The Chinook is a foehn wind; a generic term for all winds that have been warmed and dried by descent off a slope. The Chinook occurs over the front range of the Rocky Mountains and western plains of North America. They usually blow from the southwest to west and are quite strong, often 25-40 knots with gusts as high as 80 knots. Their effects are most strongly felt in southwestern Alberta where they funnel through the Crowsnest Pass before fanning out across southern Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Chinook est un mot amérindien qui signifie littéralement «mangeur de neige», une allusion à sa capacité de faire fondre rapidement des accumulations de neige durant l'hiver. Le chinook est un foehn, terme générique pour tous les vents qui ont été réchauffés et asséchés en descendant une pente. Les chinooks se produisent sur les chaînons frontaux des Rocheuses et l'ouest des plaines d'Amérique du Nord. Ils soufflent habituellement du sud-ouest ou de l'ouest et sont assez forts, souvent de 25 à 40 nœuds avec des rafales jusqu'à 80 nœuds. Leurs effets se font surtout sentir dans le sud-ouest de l'Alberta, où ils sont canalisés dans le col Crowsnest (pas du Nid-de-Corbeau) avant de se répandre dans le sud de l'Alberta et de la Saskatchewan.

A cold, very squally wind, descending from the east or southeast in the region of the Danube "Iron Gate" through the Carpathians, continuing westward over Belgrade, thence spreading northward to the Rumanian and Hungarian borderlands and southward as far as Nish.

In winter it brings temperatures down to below-29°C and it is cool even in summer, when it is also dusty. It usually occurs with a depression over the Adriatic and high pressure over southern Russia, a frequent situation in winter. It is usually explained as a jet-effect wind through the Iron Gate, giving speeds well above the gradient wind, but J. Küttner(1940) regards it rather as a katabatic wind intermediate between foehn and bora. The kossava has a marked diurnal variation, with its maximum occurring between 5 a. m. and 10 a. m.

A foehn cloud formation appearing as a bank of altostratus clouds east of the Rocky Mountains, heralding the approach of a chinook.

When moisture is present, a variety of mountain-wave clouds and lee-wave clouds can form, such as the chinook arch of the Canadian Rocky Mountains west of Calgary, Alberta. The chinook brings relief from the cold of winter, but its most important effect is to melt or sublimate snow: a foot of snow may disappear in a few hours.

Hot, humid, southerly winds in southern Italy, Sicily and Malta which originate over the Sahara but gain moisture on crossing the Mediterranean Sea.

The air comes from the Sahara(as a desert wind) and is dry and dusty, but the term is not used in North Africa, where it is called chom(hot) or arifi(thirsty). In crossing the Mediterranean the sirocco picks up much moisture because of its high temperature, and reaches Malta, Sicily, and southern Italy as a very enervating, hot, humid wind. As it travels northward, it causes fog and rain. In some parts of the Mediterranean region the word may be used for any warm southerly wind, often of foehn type. In the extreme southwest of Greece a warm foehn crossing the coastal mountains is named sirocco di levante. There are a number of local variants of the spelling such as xaroco(Portuguese), jaloque or xaloque(Spanish), xaloc or xaloch(Catalonian). In the Rhône delta the warm rainy southeast sirocco is called eissero. On Zakynthos Island it is called lampaditsa.

Ce phénomène d'ascendance (provoquée) génère un refroidissement de la masse d'air, la condensation de l'eau contenue dans cette masse d'air, l'apparition de nuages et de précipitations, [...] En redescendant sur le versant sous le vent, ces masses d'air, qui ont perdu leur eau à cause des précipitations (engendrées), se retrouvent à un état d'humidité inférieur à l'état initial, et provoquent donc un effet de sécheresse sur les régions touchées. Cet effet très fréquent est nommé «Effet de Föhn ou Foehn» (et prononcé «feunn»), du nom d'un vent [chaud et sec] soufflant de l'Adriatique sur l'Autriche. Katabatic wind : Any wind blowing down an incline; the opposite to anabatic wind. If the wind is warm, it is called a foehn; if cold, it may be a fall wind(bora), or a gravity wind(mountain wind).
