Tom's first form of catastrophe is simply called the "fold". Consider a balloon being blown up by someone at a party. The control variable in this change is air pressure, because reducing or increasing air pressure alters the balloon's dynamics. As the air pressure in the balloon increases, the system approaches the edge of the catastrophe fold. If pushed too far it falls over the fold-into oblivion. Concept développé vers 1972 par le mathématicien René Thom dans sa théorie des catastrophes. Dans des domaines traditionnellement non formalisables tels la biologie ou la psychologie, on a cru possible de géométriser des situations de base en un certain nombre d'états internes, contrôlables par des paramètres «catastrophiques» et de se concentrer sur l'analyse des situations de bifurcations potentielles. L'on distingue six catastrophes élémentaires en dimension inférieure ou égale à 3 et sept autres en dimension inférieure ou égale à 4. Leurs noms soulignent la ressemblance avec des formes familières: le pli, la fronce, la queue d'aronde, la vague ou ombilic hyperbolique, le poil ou ombilic elliptique, le papillon et le champignon ou ombilic parabolique.  2, record 3, French, - catastrophe

When the number of controls is increased from one to two, a second catastrophe "map" comes into play. Now we have a system that can be pushed in two different ways. Consequently, the topological "map" of what Thom calls the "cusp catastrophe" has two dimensions, which can be represented by a sheet of paper deformed so that a fold appears.
