Le gain de la partie est acquis à l'équipe qui a marqué le plus de points. Il existe deux façons de marquer : de la main ou pied. L'attaquant qui pénètre dans la large cible offerte par l'en-but adverse, y touche le premier le ballon (qu'il porte ou qui roule) au sol : a) il fait un «touché à terre» et, du même coup, marque un «essai» qui vaut 4 points et lui donne le droit d'«essayer» de le transformer en «but» par un coup de pied de «transformation». b) Le coup de pied marque un «but» en faisant passer le ballon entre les poteaux, par-dessus la barre transversale; le but réussi sur coup de pied de transformation ajoute 2 points sur coup de pied «franc» et sur coup de pied de «pénalité» (le jeu étant arrêté), sur coup de pied tombé dit «drop-goal» (en cours de jeu). 2, record 9, French, - essai
