English

Subject field(s)
  • Air Forces
CONT

The US Air Force reached a peak strategic bomber strength in 1959 with 1, 366 B-47s, and 488 B-52s. These SAC bombers were the mainstay of US strategic forces, [and] they could reach Soviet targets.

CONT

  • Bones and Joints
CONT

The biomechanical properties that were determined were :... peak load(a measure of the maximum force that the bone withstood before fracture) ;and stiffness(a measure of the extrinsic rigidity of the bone tissue). Yield load primarily measures the contribution of mineral to bone strength, whereas peak load measures the contribution of bone matrix proteins to the strength of the bone.

CONT

initial force : A force peak resulting from the completion of that portion of a parachute canopy inflation process wherein the canopy fills from the skirt to the vent.

OBS

Under normal loading conditions, this is not the maximum opening force for a solid flat circular canopy, but is the maximum for canopies of the extended-skirt and geometric-porosity type.

CONT

Reefing assembly for a circular parachute: A reefing assembly for a circular parachute having a canopy including a skirt portion, and suspension lines attached to the skirt portion. The assembly includes a tension structure bounding a central opening and having a plurality of straight segments. A plurality of cords, each cord having two ends, are each fixed to one end of one of the tension structure straight segments to define a loop, and a plurality of rings slidably disposed on each of the loops. Each of the rings is slidably connected to at least one of the suspension lines. The rings are clustered together at a central portion of their respective loops, and upon deployment of the canopy, slide along their respective loops to become substantially equidistantly disposed on their respective loops. The assembly facilitates a restrained opening of the canopy and thereby reduces opening shock load.

CONT

The pulsed plasma thruster(PPT) with solid propellant is used for low power propulsion systems; typically with an average power less than thirty watts. Capacitor stored electrical energy is used to create a pulsed arc discharge across the face of a block of propellant, teflon in most implementations to date. The combination of thermal flux, particle bombardment and surface reactions ablates and ionises a small amount of the solid material... The peak discharge current is high, in the region of tens of kA. The self-induced magnetic field acts on the ions moving in the electric field creating the discharge to create a Lorentz body force that accelerates the plasma. Teflon PPTs have enjoyed limited use in east-west station keeping and sun pointing applications. PPTs do not produce sufficient thrust to be considered as candidates to provide primary propulsion of future out of Earth orbit missions and were not considered for SMART-1.
