FORCE STICK [10 records]

Record 1 2018-03-22

English

Subject field(s)
  • Aircraft Piloting and Navigation
DEF

The force exerted by the pilot to move the control column.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Pilotage et navigation aérienne
CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atomic Physics
DEF

A molecular device capable of converting energy into movement and able to generate forces on the order of piconewtons.

CONT

The nanomotor has a positioning stroke up to some centimeters while operating with atomic resolution and thus builds a bridge over eight orders of magnitude. The nanomotor is a piezo driven linear motor consisting of a cylindrical housing and a slider with a free axial hole inside. It utilizes a piezo tube for fine positioning and a pulse wave produced by the same piezo tube for coarse movements. Every point of its stroke can be reached with a speed of up to 5 mm/s. In its free axial hole the nanomotor can transport a tip, a hose, an electrode, a hypodermic needle, a glass fiber or even a microgripper. The nanomotor is available in three different versions. The "small" nanomotor is half the size of a match stick. It can lift six times of its own mass. The dynamic force of this nanomotor is so high, that even imprints in diamond surfaces can be produced. Special versions of the nanomotor can operate in ultra high vacuum, in liquid helium, even under water or as non-magnetic drives.

PHR

Primer, virus nanomotor.

PHR

Nanotube nanomotor.

Key term(s)
  • nano-motor

French

Domaine(s)
  • Physique atomique
DEF

Record 3 2011-08-19

English

Subject field(s)
  • Ice Hockey
DEF

A swift shot at goal made with the blade of the stick on the ice, the force of the throw being given by a snap of the wrist forward to push the stick ahead instead of using a backswing and a sweep of the stick blade into the puck.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Hockey sur glace
DEF

Record 4 2004-06-10

English

Subject field(s)
  • Anthropology
DEF

The Aztec word for a spear throwing stick device.

OBS

This projectile propulsion device preceded the bow and arrow. In general, a wooden or bone stick or board with a hand grip at one end and a spur or hook at the other end. The atlatl is used as an extension of the arm in throwing a spear or dart. The spear shaft is socketed and fits into the spur or hook of the Atlatl. Essentially the Atlatl lengthens the length of the spear thrower's arm and with loaded, spring-like, motion can provide the benefit of greater force and distance over that of the hand thrown spear. It is hypothesized that sometimes a stone weight(s)(a. k. a. : Bannerstone, Birdstone, Boatstone) was attached to the Atlatl to provide better balance or to load the device with a spring or bending effect or to diminish the "whoosh" noise created during the throwing process.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Anthropologie
CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Computer Graphics
  • Mathematics
DEF

A force which forms bonds between particles and/or clusters.

CONT

Two approaching particles do not stick necessarily even if there exists a short range attractive force between them, because a repulsive barrier in the interaction potential may prevent the particles from forming a bond.

OBS

Contrast with repelling force, repulsion force. See fractal attractor, strange attractor and chaotic attractor.

PHR

CONT

The force stick is an interesting joystick variation that solves many of the cursor positioning and overshoot problems of conventional joysticks. It can control a cursor as a joystick can, but speed and directional movement are controlled by the force and angle applied to the stick rather than by its absolute position.
