FOSSIL SURFACE [7 records]

Record 1 2012-04-20

English

Subject field(s)
  • Erosion and Weathering (Geol.)
DEF

An erosion surface that was buried by younger sediments and was later exposed by their removal.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Érosion et corrosion (Géologie)
CONT

CONT

This fossil stream channel lies buried about 300 feet beneath the surface and is filled with gravel and volcanic ash. Coarse gold nuggets were found directly on bedrock slate riffles where the Eocene gutters cut across and follow the structure.

CONT

Collaborative Project Replicates 565-Million-Year-Old Fossil Surface.-... A 750 square foot(70 m²) detailed mold covering of one of the most spectacular fossil surfaces in the world has been successfully created.... The fossil surface has been, and continues to be, affected by various issues such as erosion and weathering that, over time, contribute to its gradual deterioration.

CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Paleontology

CONT

The water it receives comes from snowpack from nearby mountains that melted anywhere from 8,000 to 12,000 years ago. It takes that long to filter into the aquifers and back out onto the wetlands. It’s called "fossilized water."

CONT

It is interesting that we start this discussion with some speculation about artesian bores that could be 30 000 years old or one million years old. In fact, we are talking about fossilised water, which is similar to fossil fuels in that it comes from prehistoric natural endowments that have been trapped in the earth's surface.

General Reconstruction of Watermasses and Paleoprovincialism.-The global spatial differentiation of dinocyst assemblages(i. e., provincialism) depends on the physiochemical characteristics of the water masses in which the thecal stage developed, and on surface water circulation patterns. Dinocyst provincialism in the fossil record, first recognized in Mesozoic sediments... can be used to trace the direction, origin and intensity of surface currents in the past. For instance, assemblages in a given region that are under the influence of equatorially derived surface currents will become strongly altered if subjected to the influence of a current from high latitudes.

DEF

A mold or impression in the surrounding earth or rock, showing the surface form and markings of the outer hard parts of a fossil shell or other organic structure; also the surrounding rock material whose surface receive the external mold.

CONT

Following burial of the hard parts of an organism, sedimentary materials are packed closely around them.... The impression of skeletal remains in adjoining rock constitutes ... an external mould, if the shape of the outer side of the hard parts is shown ...

CONT

If a shell is buried unfilled and then dissolves, ... an external mould [is left] which if subsequently filled with material will yield ... an external cast.

CONT

In the Sahara a rock stratum called the Continental Intercalary, which dates to the Cretaceous Period and which includes Nubian Sandstones, is the most important water-bearing layer. It extends over very large areas and reaches a thickness of more than 3, 000 feet; in Egypt and Algeria it provides artesian water. In The Sudan it sometimes lies directly on the Precambrian rock and contains underground water layers of local importance. Overlaying the Continental Intercalary but generally separated from it by a thick marine deposit is a layer called the Continental Terminal, which is the second-largest aquifer in this area. Both these layers contain "fossil" water _ that is to say, water that entered the layers when rainfall in and around the Sahara was much more abundant than today. Near the surface, aquifers are found in such recent deposits as alluvial deposits and sand dunes.
