A key notion in the Newell-Simon scheme is the production system, in which an operation will be carried out if a certain specific condition is met. Programs consist of long sequences of such production systems operating on the data base. As described by the theorists, the production system is kind of a computational stimulus-response link; so long as the stimuli (or conditions) are appropriate, the response (or production) will be executed. In the course of developing the General Problem Solver, Simon and Newell have propounded a perspective on artificial intelligence, a theory of thinking, and an agenda for future research. 5, record 3, English, - production%20system

A set of production rules(which is called a production system) can be interpreted in two distinct ways.... One way to interpret a production system is to work through the rules one by one until a rule is found for which the condition... is true.... Alternatively, the production system could be "run backwards", with the rules being run from "right to left". 6, record 3, English, - production%20system

2, record 11, French, - sondage
Record number: 11, Textual support number: 2 CONT
4, record 11, French, - sondage

Works are listed by the artist's family name and in the few cases of artists known only by a first name, such as "Bartolomeo Veneto, "we have retained the name "Bartolomeo" rather than the qualifier. In the few cases of nicknames that have gained universal currency, such as "Clodion" or "Cigoli, "we have kept the commonly used nickname. Works of anonymous artists who in modern times have been given names such as "Master of the Marble Madonnas" or "Master of the Medici Chapel Altarpiece" are to be found under "Master" at the letter "M". Anonymous works have been grouped under "Unknown" followed by the school or country of origin of the artist. For easier access, copies after known works or works attributed to the school or following of an artist have been grouped under the name of the original artist. Equally, to facilitate research, when a work has changed attribution we have included the old attribution. 1, record 12, English, - Master%20of%20the%20Medici%20Chapel%20Altarpiece

1, record 12, French, - Ma%C3%AEtre%20du%20retable%20de%20la%20chapelle%20Medicis

Colloidal Propulsion. Colloidal thrusters were developed extensively in the seventies but then work was stopped.... a number of problems prevented them from becoming a viable technology. In order to achieve useable thrusts(in the mN range) the researchers had to try and make large number arrays of the needle emitters. They found reproducible and consistent manufacturing to be difficult to achieve and as well as this, the size of the thrusters soon became inattractive. Another disadvantage was the extremely high voltage needed to achieve the perfomance, voltages well in excess of 10kV were required for operation and this was neither easy or desirable from a spacecraft power perspective. 1, record 22, English, - colloidal%20propulsion

Promotion of a chemical reaction by addition of a substance or enzyme(catalyst) that partakes in, but is not permanently affected by the reaction. In the case of enzymes, it is mediated by the functional groups found in amino acid side chains and coenzymes. Notably, the amino acid side chains of histidine, serine, cysteine, lysine, glutamate, and aspartate are frequently directly involved in the catalytic process. Coenzymes or metals work in conjunction with enzymes to provide a greater variety of functional groups than is available through amino acid side chains alone. 2, record 29, English, - catalysis

DNA technology enables the facile modification of proteins by highly specific mutagenesis of their genes. Enzymes with novel properties may be produced in large quantities from the mutant genes. Kinetic analysis of the mutant enzymes can be combined with high-resolution structural data from protein X-ray crystallography to provide direct measurements on the relationships between structure and function. In particular, the strength and nature of enzyme-substrate interactions and their roles in catalysis and specificity may be studied. 3, record 29, English, - catalysis

8, record 35, French, - syndrome%20des%20b%C3%A2timents%20malsains

1, record 35, Spanish, - s%C3%ADndrome%20del%20edificio%20enfermo

Pre-design research had indicated that part of the turnover problem was caused by "job shock. "Applicants were told about job requirements and given a tour of the Wafer Fab before completing the employment process. However, the nature of the work in a "clean room" and the special clothing required was so foreign to the typical entry-level applicant that, although they thought they would be able to adjust to the conditions, many found they didn’t like the job once they had worked in it for a few days. We found that cleaning scab-infected wheat on a gravity table before storage increased the storability of 20% moisture wheat by 12 to 43%. In our corn storage tests, even though we used varieties that were believed to have wide genetic differences, the chemical compositions were too similar for our model that predicts sotrability from composition to work well. Also, we found that storability rankings(best to worst) were not consistent from one year to the next. Our machine vision work resulted in development of a new on-line calibration procedure that gives us more consistent readings under changing lighting conditions; a procedure for quantifying mold coverage on corn kernels; and a batch analysis procedure for analyzing kernel mechanical damage that is much simpler and faster, but only slightly more variable than analyzing kernels one at a time. 2, record 49, English, - gravity%20table

The sources of international law. There is innate in man a consciousness of right and wrong, regulating his behaviour towards his fellows, the recognition of the requirement to "co-exist" with them on a reasonable footing. Human society, on the other hand, cannot function without a certain number of binding rules of conduct which must be such as to enable it to avoid bellum omnium contra omnes. These factors are the underlying causes of the birth of law in any human community. The accent may be laid on one or other of these fundamental elements, but the two are always present. These are the "sources" of the law in their philosophical, psychological, sociological connotation, the "material" sources.... The concrete ways and means, the "formal" sources of the law, differ from community to community : they are not the same in secular as in ecclesiastical communities, nor in national as in international society. These "formal" sources,... necessarily reflect the nature and structure of the community concerned : they appear as custom, legislation, bye-laws, national case law, papal bulls, treaties, resolutions of international bodies, etc., as the case may be. There is still a third sense in which the expression "sources" is used in respect of law; in this sense the metaphor does not refer to the basic or to the "formal" origins of legal rules, but to the documents and writings in which they can be found, just as in another field historians work with their "sources". These are not, of course, genuine sources of the law. 2, record 50, English, - sources%20of%20international%20law

Activation of macrophages by bacterial lipopolysaccharide(LPS) induces transcription of genes that encode for proinflammatory regulators of the immune response. Previous work has suggested that activation of the transcription factor activator protein 1(AP-1) is one LPS-induced event that mediates this response. Consistent with this notion, we found that LPS stimulated AP-1-mediated transcription of a transfected reporter gene in the murine macrophage cell line RAW 264. 7. As AP-1 activity is regulated in part by activation of the c-Jun N-terminal kinase(JNK), which phosphorylates and subsequently increases the transcriptional activity of c-Jun, we examined whether LPS treatment of macrophages resulted in activation of this kinase. 3, record 56, English, - jun%20N%2Dterminal%20kinase

Bérain motifs. A type of decoration originating with Jean Bérain père and followed by his son, Jean Bérain fils. Taken from his design books, it was an elaborate pattern of mythological and grotesque figures and half-figures, vases of flowers, drapes, baldachins, balustrades, and urns, all seeming to be floating in mid-air. Motifs based on the work of Bérain occur on the marquetry furniture of Boulle, and as ornament to many other works of art. In ceramics they are most notable as the decoration of certain kinds of mid-18th-century faience from Moustiers, but they can also be found on some French porcelain of the same date. 2, record 58, English, - B%C3%A9rain%20style

Long-term exposure is the last classification of exposure in industrial toxicology. This exposure is not typically found in the industrial environment but is used extensively in laboratory applications. Even with novel work hours, workers rarely exceed 16 hours on the job. Therefore, long-term exposure is not as valuable in the industrial environment as it has been in laboratory testing. Long-term generally relates to exposures of greater than one year in length and is usually used in carcinogen testing of animals. 1, record 60, English, - long%2Dterm%20exposure

New more effective ways to regulate can be found to protect health, safety, and the environment. Consideration must be given to competitiveness and economic growth. There are alternatives such as self-regulation, use of voluntary guidelines, use of national consensus standards, and the like that will enable the private sector and the government to work better together to achieve public objectives. 1, record 61, English, - public%20objective

1, record 61, French, - objectif%20public

Following up the twenty year old work of M. E. Fisher, it was shown(SC, SK) that for anisotropic two-dimensional lattices there can be two-dimensional distributions of zeros. Shortly before this, B. Derrida, L. DeSeze, and C. Itzykson found fractal patterns in so-called hierarchical lattices. The particular attraction of this discovery was that it used renormalization theory in an essential way, described in detail in the following section. 1, record 64, English, - hierarchical%20lattice

The proportioning of members to carry loads in a structure in the most economical way. A structural design is carried out in two main parts, the first being a rough estimate of the loads with the structural analysis. When the structural analysis is checked and found satisfactory the loads are more accurately estimated. The second half of the design consists of the proportioning of the members according to the calculations of the first half, together with the adjustment of the original calculations to any final altered sizes of parts. This is the main work of a structural engineer, since most conventional building types have been sufficiently analysed and need no further analysis in the drawing office. 2, record 66, English, - structural%20design

One of Pasteur's central concepts, that each fermentation provides energy to the species conducting it, led to the accidental discovery of cell-free metabolism by Eduard Buchner of Germany in 1897. Buchner found that an extract of macerated yeast, freed of intact cells by filtration, retained the ability to convert sugar into alcohol... Later work showed that the biological conversion actually consisted of a series of simple chemical reactions, each catalyzed by a specific enzyme. 1, record 67, English, - cell%2Dfree%20metabolism

1, record 67, French, - m%C3%A9tabolisme%20acellulaire
