A small but deep usually rectangular hole dug for underpinning, foundations, retaining walls and the like.

CONT

Hand-excavated pits with timber sheeting were once common and may still often be used to advantage, especially in underpinning ...

CONT

Limited-area, vertical excavation might almost be called foundation excavation, because a large part of it consists of digging single excavations of small size.

DEF

Excavation verticale exécutée dans le sol destinée [...] à l'établissement de fondations profondes.

DEF

Record 6 2000-11-30

English

Subject field(s)
  • Civil Engineering
  • Dams and Causeways
DEF

A trench excavated below the normal base of a dam or other structure and filled with relatively impervious material to reduce percolation under the structure.

CONT

Excavations for the cut-off trench began on June 1, and were completed by the end of the month. Suitable material excavated from the trench was placed in the embankment. Following excavation of the trench, the cut-off wall footing was cut into bedrock to a depth of three feet. Placement of the cut-off wall followed excavation of the footing and was completed by the end of july. The cut-off wall extends across the bottom of the trench and up both abutments and provides a water-tight seal between the dam and foundation.

DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Deep Foundations
  • Cofferdams and Dewatering (Construction)
DEF

A structure which is sunk through ground or water for the purpose of excavating and placing work at the prescribed depth and which subsequently becomes an integral part of the permanent work. A box-caisson is a caisson closed at the bottom but open to the atmosphere at the top. An open caisson is a caisson open at the top and the bottom. A compressed-air or pneumatic caisson is a caisson with a working chamber in which the air is maintained above atmospheric pressure to prevent the entry of water and ground into the excavation.

DEF

A cylindrical site cast concrete foundation that penetrates through unsatisfactory soil to rest upon as underlying soil; an enclosure that permits excavation work to be carried out under water.

DEF

OBS

English

Subject field(s)
  • Deep Foundations
CONT

Caissons... are load-bearing enclosures sunk into the ground, usually to protect excavation for a foundation, aid construction of the substructure, and serve as part of the permanent structure.... In foundations, caissons are used to facilitate construction of shafts or piers extending from near the surface of land or water to a bearing stratum. This type of construction can carry heavy loads to great depths.... They range in size from abut that of a pile to over 100 ft in length and width. Some small ones are considered caisson piles.... For some of the smaller caissons used for foundation shafts, the casing generally is not assigned any load-carrying capacity, or it may be withdrawn as concrete fills the hole.
