Subject field(s)
  • Oil Drilling
DEF

An offshore drilling structure consisting of a number of compartments that are flooded to cause the structure to submerge and rest on the ocean floor.

CONT

... the submersible drilling unit... is used in shallow waters such as rivers and bays, usually in waters up to 50 feet deep.... The submersible has two hulls. The upper hull... is used to house the crew quarters and equipment, and the drilling is performed through a slot on the stern with a cantilevered structure. The lower hull is the ballast area and is also the foundation used while drilling. The submersible is floated to location like a conventional barge and is then ballasted to rest on the river bottom.

Record 5 2008-09-17

English

Subject field(s)
  • Glaciology
DEF

Cumulative upward displacement of objects embedded in the ground, caused by frost action.

CONT

Frost jacking results from basal or vertical freezing pressures acting on the underside of a foundation, structure or object, or from adfreezing of soil to the sides of these objects. The cumulative upward movement over a period of time(one or several freeze-thaw cycles) may result in the foundation unit or object being ejected from the ground.

CONT

Frost-jacking - When heaving occurs ..., if a structure imbedded in the ground is not properly anchored to resist such movement, the structure will be forced upward along with the ground surface. In most cases, the structure does not return to its original position when the active layer thaws during the following summer. The net upward movement is called "jacking." This phenomenon can occur whenever there is seasonal freezing and thawing of the active layer, and is not limited to permafrost areas.

CONT

Fence posts and utility poles or towers are commonly affected, and both deep (pile) and shallow (post) foundations (e.g., used for bridges, wharves, unheated or lightweight buildings) have been seriously affected by frost jacking.

OBS

upfreezing: Synonym: (not recommended).

Record 6 2008-09-15

English

Subject field(s)
  • Urban Sociology
  • Urban Planning
CONT

The neighborhood unit was designed to support 6,125 residents or 1,241 families. The spatial unit is centered on an elementary school as well as small parks and playgrounds. At 160 acres, the neighborhood radius is one-quarter of a mile or a 5-minute walking distance. Heavy through-traffic is confined to major arterials at the edges of the neighborhood and an internal street system accommodates local traffic. Local shops are also located at the periphery of the unit. These are the principles for a low-cost suburban development.

CONT

The concept of a neighborhood unit was developed by Clarence Perry(Housing for the Machine Age, New York : Russell age foundation, 1939) to encourage community sensibilities within a defined residential area by providing schools, shops and other community facilities within easy walking distance.

OBS

"Neighborhood unit" is an ideological concept related to the "New Town" idea and seems to be a more specific and structured concept than the one designed by the term "neighborhood" itself.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Sociologie urbaine
  • Aménagement urbain
CONT
